40K on BBC

Post by Danguinius » Tue Mar 13, 2012 6:14 am

I found this on BBC`s homepage...

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-17274186

Actual mainstream media coverage of wargaming - nice.

Nice! I've put it on my FB page.

Comment #69 is by Rick Priestley himself!

And about the only one worth reading, too. :)

Indeed. Most of the comments fell into two categories.

Category A : All you gamers are geeky loser virgins who need to grow up!

Category B : We aren't geeky loser virgins! And watching football is for retards!

Got a bit repetitive. Still, nice for the hobby to get some exposure.

Hardly the the most incisive exposé on the war gaming hobby, but as Spev said, nice to get some exposure. As for comment 69, who can say if it was the real RP? To be fair, it was still a very sensible comment, so it may well have been him.

No video? I feel ripped off. As for the nay sayers all I have to say is one activity is useless as the other too bad for me I am extremely useless I watch football, soccer, political talk shows, I play basket ball from time to time and I paint and play at least 5 miniature games. But I guess it is better that hookers and snakbars.

Badruck, if you click on the picture at the top of the article it should bring up a video.
I thought this was very good report, non judgmental, not too scathing and concise. Good exposure for the hobby I reckon. If you knew nothing about it it's very well explained. I put it on my FB page and already several people like it. Mainly blokes my age and their sons it has to be said. Long live Warhammer 40k. I thought this was a good summing up of why folks play 40k as we were debating a previous thread. :)
I purposefully didn't read the comments. Plebs ;)

Spevna reckons this was a smart move and wishes he had done the same.

Yes, football and gaming always come up as opposites in this debate about which is better doesn't it. I've told this story before but I like it,
My first gaming group at Primary school was allowed to be set up by Mr Blackett (local hero and best teacher in the school) in the library at lunchtime. It was Sirs idea that we could bring in heroquest, d and d and spacehulk to play at lunchtimes. I think he was interested in the hobby and wanted to see how it was played. This was 1987 so it was still fairly new and fresh. I later found out that some of the teachers at the school, including the headmaster and the local vicar played Heroquest together once a week at the vicarage. This was pre national curriculum days remember when teachers were allowed to be human. Our vicar was also a member of the magic circle to be fair and appeared on Wogan an old daily chat show with his pet parrot and magic tricks. Very unique chap. He had lived in Papa New Guinea as a missionary and used to play us local tribe music in assemblies. Thank you C of E for Vicar Dr Fox as he liked to be called. :) Mad?!

Anyway, back on topic. The gaming group was a hit with the lads and every dinner time there were a couple more boys asking me if there was a spare character they could be in Advanced Heroquest. We ran out of heroes and we had about 6 henchmen (monster fodder) as players. The gaming group went well until the teachers asked me why I was being so horrible to my friends (the players). I said I'm the GM that's the job. Oh dear.
The best moment was when James fell down a bottomless pit with no ending, no fate points and no way of getting out.  His character had become overpowered. James leaped up and announced "Sod this, I'm going to play football." Never to be seen again until 2nd edition 40k in 1991/2. :)
Show me the child at 7 and I'll show you the man at 30. ;) Some things never change.
