that is death on a stick....

I would love it if I was playing a Marine Dread Drop pod stern guard army... loaded with Plasma guns and heavy flamers... take that... but most of my armies do not fight well against MSU armies like this one.....

on a side note the guy must not be on much of a budget...

I have heard of venom and raider spam and it sounds horrible. Now it looks horrible. They have the range on you for the most part with splinter cannons or lances/disintegrators and can take out your long range/vehicles quickly and then just butcher you.

Seems like the only hope a standard army would have is to get first turn and then it might be an even battle depending on the mission. Otherwise you would have to have a very unorthodox army that could some how get the drop on them to negate their speed and reek havoc. Maybe some sort of drop pod army like the Admiral suggested, but with a forgeworld hurricane missile launcher drop pod.

But with the minis I have... the best thing to do would be to keep my carry cases etc close by for quick and easy clearing away of dead minis.

IMHO If a player like this doesn't get 1st turn, I bet he would keep the whole force in reserve. The opponent would then waste two turns sitting on the objectives or not getting KPs. Then, come turn two, at least half of that lot suddenly zoom onto the board completely intact. That would be fun to play against :(

If someone did this to me, I would be rather loath to play them ever again. It just reeks of cheese. The only way I could accept it is if the player had actually put tons of work into collecting and painting the minis etc. This guy hasn't even put the sails on his ravagers.

The list itself seems copy/pasted from somewhere else. I mean, why is Baron Sathonyx in there? So he can field Hellions as troops and have a cool, themed army? Nope. There isn't a single Hellion there. He is only there to get the bonus to the roll-off for first turn and to buff the Beasts.

This guy makes the Madmiral look positively fluffy in comparison.

I've played a number of games against an army much like that. I've found that to beat it I need a lot of S5-6 shooting spread across a lot of different units. If you can't reliably bring down 4-6 vehicles a turn it isn't long before you lack the fire power to stay in the game. It's like a war of attrition played out in fast-forward.

Getting the first shots is vital. Got first? Pray they don't seize. Got second? I hope your army reserves well hehe

It can be a frustrating army to play against if you're playing an assault-based list. But if you came ready to shoot down transports and have a flexible list, it's pretty fun because so much stuff dies on both sides.

I think the best lists against it are other MSU transport lists, really. GKs: 6 Psyfle Dreads, Coteaz, Libby w/ Shrouding and Henchmen/Purifiers in Razorbacks with Psybolts and Heavy Bolters. Or Eldar: a ton of Wave Serpents, Falcons, Scatter Walkers, Fire Dragons and Dire Avengers with Autarch reserves. Or the aforementioned Drop Pod assault. Oh yeah and obviously IG have the fire power and targeting potential to beat this.

Unfortunately many of the ways to stand much of a chance against this type of army involve spamming some kind of transport and I'm not really into that (luckily, as I don't want to want to buy them).

It would depend on the gaming situation. If a tourney opponent put it down I'd maybe play a round or two and see what happened, but if it got dull I'd walk. In a friendly? My minis wouldn't even hit the table. I hate spamming of any kind. Playing to waac rather than playing for fun/story (in a friendly game) is a sure sign of an opponent I can't be bothered with.

I'd also echo the comment about painting. If it was a beautifully painted army, an if it had some kind of back story then itd become much more acceptable. As a straight out net list though it reeks of asshattery.

I feel ya man. 40k just isn't fool-proof. If you try to break it, it breaks. Playing a spammy list means that mostly only spammy lists are going to be a challenge. I don't mind playing that if I know what my opponent expects from the game. But I don't want to start a game with a fluffy list, knowing that my guys won't live past turn two.

And I don't think I've ever seen an army that big fully painted, let alone painted well. I would be honored to get obliterated by a showcase army of that size.

To add to my previous comments. In a tourney, no problem. Anything goes there I reckon. I would definitely play a few times, but I have a feeling I couldn't beat it without buying a lot of minis to combat it and even then... I think it would come down to me rolling well and him rolling badly.

Either way I doubt if it would be fun get out gunned and out maneuvered. Sound like a frustrating game to me. That is the thing about 40K that I don't like. To have a chance against some armies, u have to fork out a whole heap of cash and painting time.

i dont think 40k armies need to be big to be winners. Not at all, in fact. The more units you have, the more KP you give up in the KP mission. In terms of waacy tourny lists, I'd've thought that a hard-as-nails, death-onna-stick elite list would do better than a mob rule list. (Leafblower being an example, as compared with a generic IG mob).
