choosing a new main army

Post by Colonel Voss » Thu Mar 22, 2012 9:56 am

Prim asked me a question in another thread. After a very painful move to my new digs with everyone playing havoc with my plans and leaving me with very little to do during my down time; I had a lot of time to think about things. One thing was the question Prim asked me, what army would I like to play? I answered with a list
Most likely;

Space Wolves: HQ customization is pretty neat and built on its own (instead of Minotaurs count as) it is a pretty nice codex.

'Nids: I still like the nids and think they are really cool. The new models don't really change much for me in this regard. The original reason I got rid of them was mainly that I didn't want two horde armies for 40k.

Necrons: The new fluff is inspiring, especially when you consider how I thought the last dex was super boring, the turn around is amazing.

possibles;

Vanilla Marines; It's a good dex and again built in that regard it would be fine. Own color choices gives a way to make it my own.

Dark Eldar; There are some really good models in this lot. Then again, I'd be forced to show my army against Pikey and MiJ which would probably lead my entire army to put paper bags over their heads in shame compared to these two. :lol:

Chaos Marines; Depending on the new codex, I might be willing to give them a second go. They were my first army, but I need to be convinced.
During my thinking, and after I got access to my codexes again, I read over and thought hard about things. I ended up chasing my tail more or less. Then the madadmiral said something to me during a phone conversation. It got me thinking about how our personalities and character traits come out in our gaming. The admiral's orks and Khorney demons, MiJ and his Eldar. Even Prim with his Marines can be seen easily enough. I doubt any of us can picture MiJ with an IG army or the Admiral playing the Eldar as his main army.

So my question is, what army do any of you see as being more my style or matches me the best?

You can only be a Colonel in no other army but the Imperial Guard. :D

but all honesty I could imagine you playing IG, Dark Eldar and Chaos Space Marines. I imagine you like aggressive forces that are highly competitive. Actually I never imagine you as a SW player on the fact the book is actually confining. It has lots of options but the forces are actually kind of lop-sided or awkward, in my experience. (ie things like Lone Wolves and the odd thunderhammer storm shield costs.)

Anyway I first and foremost imagine you as an IG commander, maybe because I've seen you play them or maybe because I know you have a WWII fixture too.

At least that is what I imagine what Col. Voss must be like.

Interesting. I hope you didn't just choose based on what I said. Feel free to point out other armies that might match. I am curious how you relate aggressive to IG

Only YOU know the answer to that question I'm afraid. :) There is no right answer.
It got me thinking about how our personalities and character traits come out in our gaming.

I agree with this but have to protest that I believe some wargames/games actually bring out the worst in my character rather than my character as a whole. :oops:

Ash, I never said there was a right answer. But peoples perceptions can be quite interesting and that is what I am looking for. In the end, I will choose the army I want, but in the mean time, I am trying to generate a few new trains of thought and how people perceive my character traits into the variety of armies 40k has a great possibility of doing just that. Already Job has highlighted some things that I may not have thought of.

Like you, some armies will bring out my worse side and again that is something that might be worth knowing. If I pick an army that when losing will make me grumpy, then it is best not to make that army my main.

i was gonna say IG, but actually, I think 'crons might not be terrible for you. They seeeeeeeem to be fairly forgiving (more so than eldar, fr example), and I think if you really sat down with the dex and planned out what you want the army to do for you it could be a goer. I know you like to make your own fluff, and the crons are a pretty new army, especially if you consider their recent reimagining, so if you read the new dex, work out what kind of army you want, and build it little by little, you should end up with a (reasonably) future proof, easy to paint, not too pricey, and peronalised army for yourself.

Note that I dont know the ins and outs of the new necron dex at all, I'm just basing this off my own personal image of the dudes.

Why might some armies make you grumpy when losing, but others wouldn't.

Not sure what army would suit you, don't know you well enough,but a good rule is to first pick minis you will enjoy painting. if you can't bear to paint them, playing with them probably won't be much fun either.

Well, maybe IG and "aggressive" don't match the way I was thinking about the latter two armies. Still, IG takes a lot of coordination and the mechanized lists I've seen can be very durable and difficult to be "tabled" (tons of armor, guns and loads of different squads). [I find the most frustrating thing in 40k and any wargame is being tabled. I just want a game that is close for both sides so I want to bring a durable list always.] Also think you might be a tread-head and no other army outside of the guard is going to give you that hit of fighting steel. (Well, maybe if you can satisfy yourself without treads, the Eldar and Tau can give you dose of tanks, too.)

I think you are right also to say that some armies can be frustrating to play. I love dwarves for the models, the theme and the fluff, but, boy, it can be frustrating to always strike last, to be perpetually incapable of maneuver. :? And your opponents also get frustrated when you begin to turtle and use your firepower. When I played Orcs, I found their lack of nimbleness, the lack of finesse in tactics to be limiting along with the enormous number of models to paint very frustrating. Oh, I loved what they do well -the brute force of the orcs, the toughness of regular boyz, their durability, the way they can take a few shots and how they really get stuck into a fight-, but the army didn't quiet suit me. I've learned I like more elite oriented armies.

Necrons might be good, but I wonder if they can be frustrating sometimes. They seem to predicated towards shooting and don't seem to handle close combat very well. For me that would be a problem. I like the CSM because they've always represented some balance, although definitely more cc oriented then a regular marine army.

I guess I would say do not over analyze this problem... I see you as a necron player because of all the dirty tricks they can pull... I know how you like to pull out a crazy trick.
