The books have a big following, with some people just reading the novels rather than playing the game - from what I have read on occasion on the net. I suppose if GW brings a focus on the Horus Heresy as a miniature game, they might attract such people to buy into it. Maybe?

As for myself, I wouldn't mind giving it a go. The financial investment needed is steep, though, I suppose. Lots of painting already on the table, too.

The majority of the toys are still Forge World, which is definitely on the expensive end of the hobby scale. The new box does allegedly contain a plastic Contemptor Dreadnought, which will probably work out cheaper than the FW one if you pick it up from eBay/bitz traders.

You could even use the minis in standard 40K since chapters did try to keep older marks of power armour up and running. Of the loyalists, only the Dark Angels changed their colours - black to dark green - so if you want more bang for your buck, or just like to yell "The Emperor Protects!" staying loyal might be a good idea.

HH has always been an appealling era, guess we'll have to wait and see the final box contents and price.

#edit# Thanks BoLS
Box Contents:

30x Tactical marines MK IV Plate
5x Catapharctii Terminators
1x Contemptor with Lascannon, Melta, Assault Cannon and CCW
1x Captain Aethon
1x Kurtha Sedd
12 Dice
Command Decks 42 playing cards
4-piece hex-board
49pp rulebook
And they reckon the price to be around 100GBP or 150USD

Various pictures of sprues are doing the rounds for those who care to look for them.
The Contemptor has either an Assault Cannon or a Multi Melta on one arm and a Power Fist on the other.
The Terminators have Combi-Bolters (one optional Heavy Flamer), with Power Fists/Chain Fists (Power Sword for the Sarge) or paired Lightning Claws
The 3 squads of Tacticals have Bolters and come with either a Missile Launcher/Heavy Bolter and a Flamer/Melta/Plasma Gun per squad. The Sarge can have a Chain Sword, Power Sword, Power Fist, Bolt Pistol, Plasma Pistol or Combi Weapon.

Now, if you've seen the Horus Heresy army books from FW, this weapon loadout isn't very good.
In the HH, Tacticals ALL have bolters, no special or heavy weapons. Instead the special and heavy weapons are in their own squads. 5-10 man support teams (non-compulsory troops options) get special weapons and devastators get heavy weapons. Plus, every model in the unit, including the Sarge (unless upgraded), has to carry the same gun. No mixing. Some veteran units could take an option here or there, but essentially you need 5 of the same gun to run a HH era support/dev unit.
With 30 Tacticals in the box, that gives 3 of each weapon option, meaning, you either need two sets, to trade with a friend, or buy FW.
So, either GW intends to change the army lists (boy am I glad I didn't buy those three 70GBP FW books), or is simply hoping that it will increase sales once folks realise they need extras of certain guns.

On the plus side, with a quick bitz trade, a hacksaw and a dab of glue, the Dread looks like you can have paired guns. :D

How about you Prim? Which legion would you take command of?

You missed the 's' at the end of Legions. :D
I've always liked the Raven Guard, but I don't really need to buy more marines for that 40K army (plus, it would need to be Mk.VI Corvus pattern armour). Painting more dark grey doesn't really appeal right now.
Of the rest, I like Alpha Legion on the traitor side and the Imperial Fists can look awesome (if you can paint) on the loyalist side.

LegionS in indeed :D

The fact that the box set has no Mark VI corvus pattern is a shame, as Raven Guard are cool. Having painted yellow tyranids, I would have to agree that yellow is a pain in the bum. But I have to agree it looks cool on the table.

Hard choice to pick a legion, but picking a legion whose colour hasn't changed in 40k would be a big advantage.

I think this thread may help.

Generally the loyalists kept the same colour schemes and didn't turn into warp-tainted mutants, thereby making it easier to use the minis for both 30K and 40K if you care that much about the aesthetics of power armour. (Which I do. )

Ooh, a gif!
Well M_i_J, they are in the same place they always are, lying in an unpainted pile in my games room.

Yesterday evening, I went through some boxes of minis looking for a couple of bits. I have a depressingly large number of unpainted marines. I have one box which is practically just Dreadnoughts. (As Spev can attest having seen it recently). You know you have a problem when you have a box of spare Dreadnoughts lying around. :(

#edit# Back on topic, BoLS have a couple of pictures of the rulebook (no rules yet, but as it is a boardgame, I don't think they will be representative of 30K on the tabletop). The book format looks very similar to the FW HH series, same backgrounds, same type of pictures. Now, this could just be a case of GW wanting to save money on production, but hopefully it bodes well for the direction of this game. They aren't making this many new sprues or taking potential sales from FW for no reason.
