Death guard can cry directly into their 18 Effective Hit Points; they do a reasonable Custodes impression

I think Intercessor teams are potentially quite good (basically not seeing massive downsides on going all in on bolters in general), though sadly I'm not sure Thunder Hammers are the way to go on the Sarge.

The flexibility of SM Kill Teams is all in the roster anyway. Being able to have 3-4 different Kill Teams to be able to pick from after seeing your opponent's roster is pretty handy. After looking not into the rules, I'm a fan of being able to pick equipment based on who you're up against too.

Very true - tailoring your equipment to the mission will be nice as well, and that flexibility makes Reivers (with their choice of interesting grenades and grapnels and grav-chutes and such, plus a nice reiver-specific stratagem) look like a really interesting choice. I'm also finding myself very tempted by the fact that, for firstborn, a single box of Mk IV dudes will give you every possible option for a Tactical squad fire team but the grav gun - two leaders even, one with a CC loadout and one with a combi-plasma! (Never mind that I already have a perfectly serviceable firstborn kill team - it's just that they're based for ASC on square acrylic.)

If you (or anyone else) want some SM bits for kill team I have some leftovers from a box of regular tacticals and one of the Horus Heresy starter boxes. I'll make a post about it later after I get home.

I’m being extremely waffly about if I even want a second “serious” kill team, but lore wise if I do a full marine team they’d be an all-Primaris Ultima founding chapter (for reasons that will be apparent when you see them), so my current (read: today, might change ) temptation is thinking about seeing if anyone wants to split a box of reivers.

I managed to get my hands on the core rules, so I'm pretty excited to try it out now. I really like how the melee works and the campaign stuff looks decent as well - casualty rolls and battle scars are actually a serious thing you have to worry about compared to 40k's crusade.

Going back to my question before though - after reading it a bit more I think I was right in that a pure Scion force actially has no access to orders at all. It says that all the Guard strategic ploys are always activated as "Guardsman Orders", but under the rules for that it specifically states that only Guardsmen Sergeants can issue orders. So an IG Scion force - or one led by a Tempestor, at least - just straight up loses access to all of their strategic ploys for some reason. If I were more cynical, I might claim that GW doesn't actually want anyone to play this killteam over the far superior "veteran guardsmen" team in Octarius.

But I dunno, maybe someone else can decipher what's even happening here.

Is the rule about only sergeants can issue orders on a different page? Because the rules there don't limit the orders to only sergeants.

It says that operatives within range of Guardsmen Sergeants receive the order. If you don't have a Guardsman Sergeant it is impossible to receive the order.

TBH I'd be sympathetic to a house rule allowing Tempestors to count, it feels like the ability to take Tempestors is the main counterbalance to the Veteran Guardsmen and all their *stuff*.
