Malifaux 2025

Post by Balloonacorn » Tue Mar 11, 2025 2:38 am

It is March and things are deceptively quiet at Wyrd. The last of the Ashe's models are now released and there is nothing on the upcoming slate.

There is some speculation that GG5 will drop soon as GG4 has been active for a complete year, and a few people have suggested that Malifaux 4th Ed will come out soon but there seems to be no basis for this.

Wyrd has not been totally inactive as, by my unofficial count, there has been 5 keywords completely reworked (in addition to the usual buff and nerfs that are part of tabletop gaming.) Theses are Rasputina/December, Lucius/Elite-Mimic, Som'er/Big Hat, Asami/Oni, and Brewmaster/Tri-Chi.

Personally I am looking forward to putting some more unseen keywords on the table.

No details yet but the 4th Edition teaser just dropped on the Malifaux website:

I wonder what they're going to change. I don't have any gripes with 3rd edition, but maybe some more competitive things need fixing. I also hope all the same people are playable. Looks like more info on the 14th though, presumably that's U.S. 14th.

Version updates always make me sad. I mean, I get it - ya gotta keep the game fresh for players who play often. I'm not suggesting developers shouldn't iterate. It's just always a reminder that I don't have enough time to play games I enjoy. I think I played maybe 3 or 4 games of 3rd ed? That ain't Wyrd's fault, though.

That said, I really really liked how they handled the transition to 3rd ed. Yes, they squatted one of my crews, but they did so for reasonable in-universe reasons and made it available as a dead man's hand. That, plus the fact that all the cards are available for free online goes a long way to maintaining my ongoing good will for Wyrd. (I did, for example, buy all the rulebooks for 3rd ed, if not all the faction books.)

So yeah. Here comes 4th. If they release it before August I may pick one up when I go over to Scotland. If there's a faction update card pack that might be a pickup, too. As long as we're not expected to radically update our stuff then I guess I can live with it.

MALIFAUX FOURTH EDITION - MODEL CHANGES & PROXIES
*Models with an asterisk were already in Dead Man’s Hand. © 2005-2025 Wyrd Miniatures, LLC

It appears that the only master dying is Levi? Rusty alice is taking over the crew.

I Iost some of the best Neverborn to Ten Thunderers (Hinamatsu) and Outcast (Angel Eyes and the Half Bloods)

Wyrd is claiming that the new rules will cut casual games playtime from 4 hours to 2 hours (I so hope this is true.) Dr. Silas is taking the Half Bloods andbecoming a master so maybe all factions will be getting a new master?

And...

We will also be doing some repackaging. All titled Masters from the Malifaux Burns release that were packaged together will be repackaged into their own core boxes. These will be created using smaller boxes from the keyword. This will make the game easier to pick up for new players while reducing the number of SKUs stores must handle. For example, in Fourth Edition, Nightmare will have two core boxes:

The original core box contains:

The Dreamer

Lord Chompy Bits

Coppelius

3 x Alps

And the new core box contains:

The Dreamer, Insomniac

Lord Chompy Bits, Restless

3 x Daydream

3 x Stitched Together

You can see that we combined the Deep Sleep box, which contained Alps and Stitched Together, into the new core box, cutting down SKUs and making it much easier for a new player to start playing Nightmare. This box also includes a new Lord Chompy Bits title with its own sculpt and rules. Of course, not every keyword will have a different title for the totem. Some will be older models the master has taken under their wing, and others will be entirely new models. Regardless, each title 2 master will have their own totem, making them even more distinct from the original

And...

Our plan is to begin the open beta next week on April 21st and run it for the next several months, finalizing the new edition by Gen Con 2025!

so new Malifaux in August.

I've taken a look at a few things Wyrd have said about 4e, and I'm not seeing anything that gives me huge concerns. I'm losing a few models (ice dancers! I never even got to use ye! Depleted! You were cool! Mannequin! Hang on a minute...how can showgirls even play without mannequins? :? And Ramos...well, even though you had a deadmanshand, I never actually played with him throught 3e, so I guess I can't complain about him getting squatted finally.)

As for a 2 hour game time, I'll believe it when I see it, but I commend their goal of reducing play time, so I'll give em a chance to prove their claims before I judge em.

Repackaged SKUs is a good thing, as those double-faction boxes were a pain in the arse. I'd really, really like to see them find a way for us to pick up single minis from boxes that'd usually have half a dozen minis in them, though. I never did ever manage to get a Kitty Dumont for my Honeypot crew. She's only ever been available as part of the box set, and I already have everything else in it. A downloadable stl would make for an excellent solution for those of us who don't want to pay 30 bucks shipping on a 20 buck model.

So yeah - I'm keeping an eye on this, but I'm not quite checking back daily for updates. I might even try to get in a final blast of 3e before the summer rolls around. Need to see if I can make it up to Nagoya...

A Casual game being 2 hours sounds great - that means it will only take me about 4 hours to finish a game.

I'm not surprised that Leviticus got axed. I am disappointed that nobody came back from Dead Man's Hand - I was really hoping I would get to use my Nicodem stuff again. I've also lost the Canine Remains and Rotten Belles. Hopefully they will make up for it by making sure some of my other models that rarely get play are usable again.

All the models that were retired are now official proxies for other models. The list is here:

So.... not totally useless?

Wyrd has also said that you can buy single models directly from them for one year after the new edition launches. I might be making an order especially if the new Chompy Bits models is good. You can piggy back on my order if you only need 1 or 2 models and want to save the shipping fee.

Thanks! I will think about ordering a model or two.

I appreciate that they made the effort to include retired models in the new edition. I have never needed anyone's permission to proxy, though! (not being in any official tournaments) My Belles have mostly been Doxies for this 3rd edition already.

It's a minor gripe, but im going to feel really bad proxying my mannequins as birds, then flying them over buildings while my opponent goes "eh? How'd they do that?"

*I will not, in fact, do this. Mostly because it'd be very poor show, but also because I, like all Showgirls players, already own 3 birds.

Harrumph. A small harrumph, granted, but there nonetheless.
