The Bastards are an elite group of specialists, thugs and cutthroats organised around Lieutenant Gerrick van Bergen. Ostensibly a part of 1st Company, they came about during the siege of Hive Tenebris during the Tarsonian Insurrection when the 82nd became surrounded by traitor forces. It was here that van Bergen honed his skills as a guerrilla fighter - sabotaging enemy supplies, harrying rear lines and smuggling supplies to beleaguered Imperial forces. The Bastards are made up of men either hand picked by van Bergen himself for their specialist skills or sent to him by the company Commissar as a punishment detail. If the soldier multiple infractions against them, but is considered too valuable to the unit to execute, they will often find themselves given to van Bergen so that they can earn redemption undertaking often valuable, but suicidal missions.
