Just got a big box of goodies in the post from GW, including the new Storm of Magic book.
I must say it is a nice looking book, but I am willing to bet it takes the Madmiral at least an hour to get his copy open (It's a tad tricksy). :D :D :D

After a quick look through it looks like a lot of fun. I don't think It was ever intended as anything more than a'fun expansion and that's what GW have turned out.As you would expect from the writing on the tin it puts the focus firmly on the magic phase. casting Dice go up to 4d6 but there's a whole heap of new powerful spells to blast opponents with. On top of that, all armies have access to a whole host of monsters, most familiar but some rather new. There is even a Zoat for hire! These new monsters can be bought with a special 25% premium in points, over and above the level you and you opponent have set (i.e. At 2000pts, you will get 500pts to spend on goodies). The allowance can also be spent on some new uber magic items and/or Daemonic or Undead allies.

Apart from the magic phase nothing much else has changed, except to put the focus very much on a new type of scenery called 'Arcane Fulcrums' Basically these are magical focal points and the key to winning or losing the game. Although it is possible to play SOM at any points level, IMHO it would be best played at higher points levels (2500pts plus) as some of the Catalysmic spell are exactly as described and could well wipe out smaller armies in one foul swoop.

I for one can hardly wait

I'm still waiting on my book to arrive. (Hopefully in a day or two).
It sounds like a fun little expansion and it may be the thing that gets me back into fantasy. I have already made plans to expand my High Elves and my Skaven are away being painted as we speak. :D

So, how does the expansion work? Is it an optional thing like Cityfight and Spearhead were for 40k, or do we all need to go out and buy this?

(4d6 dice? Sounds a little cooky.) :?

What he said^
Don't worry Job the Dwarves get some new toys as well. They can also use any/all of the monsters too and make pacts with Daemons too!

Oh, cool. :) :?

I'm mostly worried about things just inundating my starter army. I don't want to walk into a game day and discover I haven't contemplated any counters or stratagems to new set of rules I've never even glanced over.

No worries Job. It's all optional. If you ever wanna try it out I'll lend you the book to have a look at.
Mind you the thought of unleashing a Cockatrice or two on your Dwarves is awfully tempting

Oh joy!
GW have just re-released the Chaos Dwarf Lammasu for the Storm of Magic. They've recast the original sculpt in finecast.
I'm sure all the nostalgia-ites out there will be buying one. Right?

no, cos it was rubbish then and its rubbish now. And I played chaos dwarves...

that said, the cold one is crying out to be ridden by an eldar exodite. Shame it costs 10 quid for 1, while a unit of 5 cold one riders costs 18 quid....

Out of interest - if anyone has any of the dark elf cold one riders, can you tell me if the riders/saddles are sculpted onto the cold ones, or are they separate pieces?
