Played my first game of 8th edition

Post by Primarch » Sun Aug 22, 2010 12:39 pm

Well, I played my first game of 8th edition today with High Elves against Badruck's daemons.

Some things did come up during the game that we weren't certain about. If a terror causing unit declares charge, you take a morale test before it even checks the range. That seemed a bit...wrong? I cant remember what the rule was in 7th though. I'm not sure if we got everything exactly right since a lot of the time we were flicking back and forth between the rules, the army books and the FAQs.

The game itself went fairly well. High Elves in 8th are brutal with the ASF/High Initiative combo. My Sword Masters (always a good unit) chopped through 20 Blood Letters before felling a Blood Thirster, only losing 6 warriors in the process. In all fairness to Badruck, the Blood Thirster had lost some wounds to Bolt Throwers earlier in the game and he managed to miss a lot of attacks.

At the end of the game, I had 1570 victory points to Badrucks 826. For a total difference of 744, in 7th, that would have counted as a solid victory. In 8th, it was a draw. Unless you table your opponent, or beat them by 2:1 you get a draw. I can see a LOT of games ending in draws.

was a fun game happy that it went to a draw... (note to all Sword Masters rock)... there is nothing in the game that takes them down in combat... if a Boodthirster can't do it then nothing can.

A unit of 150 gobos with the black ork warboss and battle standard bearer nearby could do it. it's the ability to strike back against a frail unit like them that would be their downfall.

Voss is right. If you have enough bodies to ensure that you can soak the casualties and still get all your attacks back then you can do it. Mind you, ignoring the characters that may or may not be in the unit, the swordmasters will still kill 12 gobbos to a loss of 5 swordmasters. Being 10 models wide doesnt help when your opponent is only 5 wide. If I was able to position my charge at the edge of the gobbo unit rather than the centre, the swordmasters would only lose 4 models.
Goblins aren't a good choice for killing swordmasters. Unless they have bows and fanatics, in which case they're golden.

Apologies to Rob, but actually we got the game result wrong.
The main rule book has some errata
Page 143 – Victory Points
Change “[...]at least twice as many victory points as your opponent - any[...]” to “[...]at least 100 victory points more than your opponent – if you score at least twice as many victory points as your opponent, then you have achieved a crushing victory!
Basically a difference of 100 points is enough for a win. However, it wasnt a crushing victory.

cmon Badruck, ol' bean. One defeat a crappy army doth not make. Take it on the chin, and get back in the fight. Besides, Khorne doesnt care who's blood is being spread around. Could be elven, could be daemonic. Tis all skulls for the skull throne, ne :D

Also, I have played with my High Elves a LOT more than you have with your Daemons.

But seriously, how much?

For someone who plays orks and styles himself so much after orks, he sure gives up easily.
Orkses is never beaten in battle. If we win we win, if we die we die so it don't count as beat. If we runs for it we don't die neither, so we can always come back for anuvver go, see!
I'm not surprised Stu beat you. I'm sure he'll clean my clock as well when the time comes with his high elves. He's got a lot of experience and though my tactical skills aren't terrible in fantasy, they are woefully outdated. But I'll learn, I'll adapt and I'll overcome. So get back in there and fight like the khorne army that you have spilling all the blood you can, or go hide behind your orkses skirts.
