Indeed it feels like painting them goes quicker now that I know exactly what to do in order to get them the way I want them to look.

My 3rd model
Brother Orm, 1st Tactical Squad of 5th Company

Image

With this model I have been able to take my painting to a new level, the photo really doesn't do the model any justice but the way I paint the highlights have greaty improved, especially the highlighting layers of the eye lenses, I used 6 layers of highlight on the eyes.

I also tried to make a height difference on the base, with his right foot standing on higher ground. It was a little bit difficult with the static Black Reach miniature but it worked out well in the end.

very, very nice. You can just about see the highlights in his eyes in the picture, but you can definitely see that its the picture thats just a smidge blurry, not the mini. I think if youre highlighting 6 layers already then youre going to be a very good painter very soon. Id recommend doing a little practice on a model with robes or a bit of exposed skin so you can practice shading, too, as SM armour doesnt really allow for much in the way of shading, unless you want to get really technical with it.

As Badruck says - if you keep improving at this rate you'll be giving us advice in about...oooh, a month or so :D

I agree with MIJ about painting robes. Its a great way to get down techniques like shading and layering.

Thank you!
So when you shade you do the exactly opposite of highlighting? Painting a layer of darker shade over a lighter one?

I can't speak for MIJ but I use washes a lot for my shading. I generally use three layers for highiighting and then washes to subdue them and add the needed darker shade.

it varies from painter to painter, but Ive read (and kinda tried) that base coating at about 70% of your highlight colour and using lots of thin glazes (well watered down paint thats fairly transparent) to shade and highlight works well. In terms of numbers of layers, about 3 highlight and 3 shade is about the minimum. The maximum is...ooooh....about a hundred, if youre mad :D

This tutorial is very good, albeit pretty high level. The basic concept is very sound, though.

I actually printed all of it out and followed it through as I painted. The end result? This guy.

That guy is indeed very well painted. So much so that he appears in two avatars on this very forum. M_i_J's recommendations should always be listened to.

However, should you ever see him on the tabletop, run. Very fast.
