Chaos Marines:

The blue is a bit flat, and I totally flaked out and just did "abstract green swirly rune thing that could be interpreted as a hydra or something, maybe" for the chapter symbol, but what the hey!

Nothing wrong with vague green swirly things. It always struck me as odd that the Alpha Legion would have a chapter logo painted on their armour anyway. It's hard to infiltrate your enemy's ranks when you have your own icons all over the place. Vague is the way to go.

Anyway, nice job with the painting. Very cool.

Dangit. Looks like a Guard force is eminently collectable - the game level I've collected my marines for would need only just over 50 guardsmen - a couple command squads, a couple tactical squads, and a couple boxes of gor for the beastmen, because you've gotta go for *something* from the rogue trader aesthetic. Maybe I'll pick up a box of Cadians to get started with the winter bonus...

(Orks would be simple, too, for that matter, although I'm less excited about collecting them just for "liking Imperial Guard better" reasons. 25 or 30 boyz, half a dozen nobz and you're set.)

OK, OK, one more picture and then I'm really for reals done with the project.

Strangers!
Image

Thanks to Konrad for the squat and Prim for the other models!

(I didn't bother stripping the ones I repainted, and something with the guardsman's previous paint job made the basecoat go on all janky, so he's got a bit of a skin condition. Which is perfectly reasonable, considering.)

So these guys won't actually come up in play much. :? The way the game works, see, is you have a total of 36 "exploration" cards you turn over to simulate, well, exploring the hive ship as you search for vital organs / sphincters to attach melta-bombs to. In medium-size games you only actually use 24 of the cards, and in small, "I actually want to be able to play something else today too" size games you'll only use 12. Out of all 36, there are 1, maybe 2 - I forget exactly - "Strangers" events, where you find someone friendly cocooned up for some reason, and can take them along with you. (According to the RAW, there's also a 1-in-12-each chance of finding an Ogryn or an Inquisitor, but with those odds I didn't figure it would be worth the time and effort to acquire and paint models for them, so I house-ruled them right out.)

The "fun" bit is that "for some reason" can sometimes include "because it's booby-trapped with some sort of weird bio-construct," and you don't find out 'til the stranger tries to attack a Tyranid for the first time...

Group shot! Come on, line 'em all up and let use see. :D

If it were me, I'd keep an eye out for something suitable for the Ogryn and Inquisitor, but I wouldn't actively go looking.

O very well. I'll get the camera out sometime in the next week or so. :D

That's the plan, yeah, but restricting myself to plastic limits me, as does the fact that (again, according to the RAW) the Inquisitor's in terminator armor. (I think they had this guy in mind.)

Curse you and your eminently reasonable suggestions! *shakes fist*

Hmm, most eBay sellers are tending to put an ogre or a grey knight at about 1000 yen a pop for buy-it-now in bitz. Something for me to keep in mind, certainly.
