Painting tips and advice welcome. Undercoat, spray black or flame red as a base?

Depends what colour you want it to be. If black, then by all means spray black. If red, then my advice would be to spray white, then spray red (Tamiya probly do a matt red spray. Failing that, my airbrush is at your disposal. In fact, if you want to have a shotty airbrushing, that mini would be a good one to try it on. We could have a painty day. Just a thought :)). Then shade down to black.

Also, if you can get away with it, leave the wings off until after it's painted, otherwise they'll get in the way. Depends on how cleanly they can be attached, though.

When I did mine, I undercoated it black, then re-undercoated the bits that would be fire in white, painted those, then tidied up the black before highlighting that. Most of the model will be black, after all. I painted the red bits on the forearms and wings straight over the black, as I wanted it to be a dull glow on those areas, not bright fire.

Best of luck with the Balrog. It's a nice piece of kit.

As many of you have mentioned The Balrog is a nice piece of kit to put together. So easy and very well designed. It took about 10 minutes. Wings and base are still detachable for painting.

Image

It's not everyday you get to paint a Balrog so I'm making the most of this. Now this IS fun!

You know what you awoke in the dark.
Shadow and flame!

Progress! Today I glued some busted up marines back together and their landspeeder storm and added a slight undercoat of dragon red army painter to the Balrog base of shiny black. :)

Work in progress. Next, orange and yellow highlights for the flame.

Song of Durin
The world was young, the mountains green,
No stain yet on the Moon was seen,
No words were laid on stream or stone
When Durin woke and walked alone.
He named the nameless hills and dells;
He drank from yet untasted wells;
He stooped and looked in Mirrormere,
And saw a crown of stars appear,
As gems upon a silver thread,
Above the shadow of his head.

The world was fair, the mountains tall,
In Elder Days before the fall
Of mighty kings in Nargothrond
And Gondolin, who now beyond
The Western Seas have passed away:
The world was fair in Durin's Day.

A king he was on carven throne
In many-pillared halls of stone
With golden roof and silver floor,
And runes of power upon the door.
The light of sun and star and moon
In shining lamps of crystal hewn
Undimmed by cloud or shade of night
There shone for ever fair and bright.

Image

There hammer on the anvil smote,
There chisel clove, and graver wrote;
There forged was blade, and bound was hilt;
The delver mined, the mason built.
There beryl, pearl, and opal pale,
And metal wrought like fishes' mail,
Buckler and corslet, axe and sword,
And shining spears were laid in hoard.

Unwearied then were Durin's folk;
Beneath the mountains music woke:
The harpers harped, the minstrels sang,
And at the gates the trumpets rang.

Image

The world is grey, the mountains old,
The forge's fire is ashen-cold;
No harp is wrung, no hammer falls:
The darkness dwells in Durin's halls;
The shadow lies upon his tomb
In Moria, in Khazad-dûm.
But still the sunken stars appear
In dark and windless Mirrormere;
There lies his crown in water deep,
Till Durin wakes again from sleep.

Gimli stood up and sang this song when recalling the splendour of Dwarrowdelf. Sam Gamgee liked the song so much he wanted to learn it.
