Could it be that the chapter master and veterans were chosen at the end of the heresy era by Arch magos Cawl to be kept in stasis for the primaris project, and thus have borne witness to the end of an age and the death of the Emperor's dream!

Once they were LEGION! now they are... chapter.
And what an age to awaken to!

I'd like to add a suggestion (since I didn't make any rules saying that I couldn't and I love abusing my power).
Geneseed - Iron Hands. They don't get anywhere near enough love in the official fiction.

Also, since Yellowstreak's suggestion of a modification of the the Nagoya city symbol with a hammer added to it, I think it's safe to say that the Chapter name shouldn't include any references to spears, swords, or the like. :D

Sadly Brother Yellowstreak has failed to read the Codex approved methods of generating a new Chapter. Only one suggestion may be made at a time. (Though since ToD has made his suggestion already, I think we can accept your idea).

But which pattern of Imperial Colours should be chosen?
To be fair my second suggestion was about colour design, which wasn’t listed in the original post! :D

IIRC, "chapters" existed within the Heresy-era Legions, as sort of what chapters are in "current day" 40K, just without the unique color schemes - subsets of a legion sharing a common culture, home planet, and/or station, working as a coherent fighting force, so that's entirely plausible.

It varied by Legion. Both the Ultramarines and Word Bearers had Chapters. Iron Hands had Clans, Death Guard had Great Companies and Alpha Legion had something different every day. No, seriously, the Alphas never fielded the same formation twice. Their lore in the FW Heresy books is great.

Let's let that percolate a bit for a chapter name then. Maybe get inspired by our final colors.

While I'm tempted to play silly buggers and say "tartan" (hey, they have clans...) I'll be sensible and say "gunmetal", but as a secondary colour. Somebody please suggest a sensible primary colour?

Gunmetal it shall be then. Though I think tartan would be cool, I'm not altogether sure it counts as a 'colour'. :D

Hmm, so what's a good color to use in a half scheme with gunmetal? Black seems like it wouldn't have enough contrast, I already vetoed blue  and there are a couple IH successors that use red already.

Ooh, metal and bone?

Hmm but what do the bone and metal represent?

The flesh is weak! So how about gun metal on one side and another metal on the other side. All metal! In memory of our dearly departed Ferrus san, and because we were too weak to save him. Poo. Forsaking all distraction and embracing the machine!
