Look at you all, with your fancy *paper* codexes and miniatures not made of lead and sculpted in the 90s! With your fancy gargantuan creatures and your skyfire! I guess at least I'm unlikely to need to buy anything new for my army for another decade.....

Had a read through most of the new Eldar Dex.
The Knight went up in points a little, though still not enough to justify it's status as a gargantuan AND have D guns.
Pretty much everything else either stayed the same or went down in cost. Warwalkers now get free scatter lasers, vypers took a points cut and the crimson hunter decreased as well.
Exarches no longer get their choice of powers. Each aspect now has one built in ability for free and the exarch has some other power. They did get an extra wound though.
The new formations are pretty good, the guardian ones do charge a vyper tax, but as they are now cheap, the benefits of the formation far outweigh the vyper. The storm guardian formation gives all your storm guardians their weapon upgrades for free. Thats 90 points of power weapons and 60 points of meltas.

I didn't read through the HQ's or the psychic powers in any great detail to compare them, but Karandras took a hefty points cut and now automatically outflanks on turn 2 from ANY board edge. So on turn 2, 10 shrouded, stealthed scorpions+exarch+Karandras walk into your back field, with potentially +1WS and rerolling 1's to hit. You then have 1 turn to either remove them OR vacate the area at high speed before they tear you a new one.

After also having a quick read through the new codex and doing some quick calculations, I figure the basic 1500pts army I have been using recently will come in 50pts cheaper. That's enough for 5x heavy weapons for my bikes (maybe ;) ). I'm sure that'll make all the difference come Nagoyahammer.

And here I was thinking I was going to get 12x Wraithknights in my army. How am I going to pwn everyone now?

Seriously, I'm liking the Howling Banshees semi-revival. 'Bout bloody time! The Aspect warrior formation looks interesting too.

generally I'm liking the new dex. Aspect warriors of all stripes are actually competing for slots again, with the banshees likely seeing a welcome return to the tabletop. I'm a tad put out by the new detachment (bear with me - I'm still a noob when it comes to 7th ed and have yet to discern the differences between a detachment and a formation. Is the former just a specialised group of the latter?) Anyway, I find it a bit off that, even as an eldar player of over 20 years I still dont have the required minis to field even one of the basic formations involving guardians which are a pre-requisite for the only detachment in the book. Who the heck has 30 guardians, 24 storm guardians or 9 jetbikes? I can just about swallow the 9 jetbikes thing, as they have always been darn useful and a spammy person (or one who rilly rilly loves Saim Hann) could legitimately be expected to have that many of em, but who teh heck has that many basic guardian infantry? I call blatant cash grab...

Anyway - I feel a need to actually properly read the rules for formations and detachments, because teh whole "one HQ and 2 troops minimum" thing seems to me to be an idea which is being left further and further in the distant past. I'm starting to be concerned that I don't actually know the rules well enough to play the game anymore :( This is due to a combination of too many books and me not having any time to actually play games these days. Aaaaanyway, I shall get on it and sort it out. Come Naghammer, I shall be a veritable rules bible, o yes indeedy... :?

As I understand it, a detachment gives you a force org chart of some flavour. A formation requires you to take a precise group of units.
So 1 HQ, 2 Troops etc. is a detachment.
3x 10 man Dire Avenger units is a formation.
The entire book is a blatant cash grab. There is nothing new in the book that they couldn't have released as a Sanctus Reach/Shield of Baal style campaign pack with updated formations. The last book wasn't that old and certainly wasn't incompatible with 7th Ed. Warlord traits, psychic powers, unique items, they were all there.
While it's nice to see Banshees and Hawks getting some updates, cranking the whole book up a notch (or several in some cases), seems to be very much a case of Short Term Sales〉〉〉Long Term Game Viability.

It's telling of how much I agree with that line of thought that I haven't even bothered to go to 4chan or other naughty sites to look at the scans.

I'm with the camp that thinks the new codex (and those scatter laser bikes in particular) will destroy the game.

But I'm still going to play any Eldar army I see. Fair's fair after I brought all-tank lists so many times.

Do you really think it's that bad? I remember people being pretty miffed about the Blood Angels codex when they got deep striking land raiders, but they eventually got over it.

Why do you think it'll destroy the game?

*just to clarify, as there is total lack of intonation with Internet comments, I am genuinely curious about what you see as being so bad about it, and that I am not trying to pick a fight.

Not speaking for Dekana here, but deep striking land raiders was pants-on-head levels of dumb.
The jetbikes thing is less dumb and much more effective.
For the cost of said deep striking land raider you get 40 shots at 36" range, that wound most of the infantry in the game on a 2+, mounted on one of the fastest units in the game, which depending on how many psychic powers the controller has may be rerolling any dice rolls they like. And they are a scoring unit.

Math-hammer
Vs. Boyz
40 shots, 27 hits, 23 wounds, 23 dead boyz.
Vs. Guardsmen
40 shots, 27 hits, 23 wounds, 15 dead guards.
Vs. Fire warriors
40 shots, 27 hits, 23 wounds, 12 dead fire warriors.
Vs. Marines
40 shots, 27 hits, 23 wounds, 8 dead marines.
Vs. Terminators
40 shots, 27 hits, 23 wounds, 4 dead terminators.
Vs. AV 10
40 shots, 27 hits, 14 hull points.
Vs. AV 11
40 shots, 27 hits, 8 hull points.
Vs. AV 12
40 shots, 27 hits, 4 hull points.

So you end up with a unit that, by itself, can shred it's way through a unit a turn and that can scoot back out of range after firing. Add in the benefits of Guide/Doom/Fortune etc and they get even better. I don't believe they break the game (The Distort guns get that title), but they are a very scary proposition to face.
