Hail Caesar: The Conquest of Gaul

Post by Primarch » Tue Jun 26, 2012 1:03 am

Over on the Warlord forums, someone let slip about an upcoming starter set for Hail Caesar being released in July. Whilst the head of the company (Paul Sawyer, aka Fat Bloke the ex-editor of White Dwarf), has confirmed it, the details haven't beem totally revealed yet. What has been said is that there will be a full set of rules with a dust cover and a load of plastic models. Despite having 200 unpainted Celts and 100 Romans in my to do pile, I am still excited by this news.
There have also been discussions about a series of campaign supplements covering major historical conflicts, so I wonder if this set will include some extra information and missions.

My Warlord Celts are on the way, so this sounds like a good buy for me at least, especially if there is a more portable version of the HC rulebook inside. Maybe a starter like this will mean others will be tempted to get on board. Or not.

I've always fancied getting into some kind if historical game. Don't think I could stomach painting a Napoleonic army but I reckon a gaul or Celt army might be a goer.

Assuming the celts in the boxed set are the same as the regular ones (no reason why they wouldn't be), they are really nice for what you pay. 50p per model or thereabouts. Lots of good painting options too, bright colours for the clothes, tattoos, wild hair, a little light armour mixed in and the shields come with stickers so you don't need to freehand them, though you can if you want.

I am currently working my way through a unit of Romans as a break from 40K minis. Maybe I should concentrate on the Romans more....

I assume that a celt army would be akin to a horde army in WHFB and require a lot of minis? How many we looking at?

A unit of celts comes at 40 to the box. The rules suggest that you base them 10 wide and 4 deep to look like a warband of ravening warriors. However, 10x2 would be fine. The most important thing is the units frontage on the table. You can also use rank filler to bulk them out a bit if you like.
Basic size for a game is 4 units, but since both Lovejoy and myself have celts, that should be an easy number to reach.

So that would be either a 4 units of 40, or 4 units of 20. Hmmm, not undoable.

Shall have to give this a ponder.....

As soon as I know the contents of the box I will post it up here. Hopefully we can get it through Ikeda san at a price comparable to the UK. Warlord dont do any of GW's 270 yen to the pound nonsense. Straight exchange rate all the way.

More models to buy? Oh no. I couldn't possibly. I'm in a bit of a quandary because I have an army for ancients but they are 20mm. I have an army of Caesar, the salad dressing dude.
Forget about yesterday, don't worry about tomorrow because all that matters is today.

As long as they are on similar bases to the 28mm guys, is it a huge problem?
