Basing your troops for FOW (or any other game)

Post by job » Tue Mar 27, 2012 4:19 pm

I'm posting this to help address Voss' questions as he works on his FOW models. Hopefully it can become a reference for anyone who is interested in basing their FOW models or basing for another game.

Here are some tutorials on the internet to use.

Video by BF that shows how they base with spackle :

Also, not mentioned above but what I used for years was modeling clay. It is cheap and you can buy it at Tokyu hands and other craft stores. You can easily layer it by hand or with tools. The drawback is it tends to not adhere by itself. This can lead to it popping off the base later. Also it condenses as it dries and shrinks, although I think this depends on the brand a little.

The spackle is called (update in the morning). You can find it in the hardware departments or home improvement stores. I recommend watering it and using it like the way they recommend in the BF video.

Another option is pumice gel. I have never used it, but I've heard people have gotten very good results with it. I think it is offered by GF9. I'm not entirely sure.

Another point is scour the surface a little before applying anything. You can scratch it with a knife or scour with rough sand paper.

Some people like to paint the models and base together. In which case you can glue them to the surface or press the models into the basing material. I've had success with both of the latter two, but watch out that models doesn't drop out later if you just press it into the basing material. If you decide to paint the models separately, but watch out that you don't get any of the basing material on your nicely painted models.

Very useful and informative. Thanks. I've got a big game booked for August with the Major back in England. He has his own warbunker in the attic. I will be painting and prepping lots of Percy Pig models for then so this has come at the right time.
Thanks for the reminder.

Next time I can give you some extra bases for medium size stands.

I hope MtP will also chime in about his techniques because he does spectacular bases for his stuff. And of course everyone else with their technique can add to.

I should mention there are other routes.

BF offers its own city rubble bases:

There is a video included on how to quickly base with those.

Also I've found cobblestone plastic strips at Joshin's train supply area. It is called 情景小物. (じょうけいしょうぶつ)There are several varieties, the cobblestone I am using is 石垣. (いしがき

It is really easy to work with. The only thing is you'll have cut off the bases of the infantry models, which can be an arduous task.

This guy, The Painting Clinic, does a fantastic job here doing everything from basing to finishing the models:

His channel is also great, packed with inspiring paintings and ideas for schemes.
