Mantic goes on the Warpath

Mantic are currently working on a new SF game entitled Warpath. (Or is that War
hammer40000path?)
Anyway, not much news as of yet, but you can see some concept sketches
here.
Some of it looks ok, other bits remind me of their recent Draco-chickens.
I am not so keen on the walkers, and the picture at the bottom looks like a bike being ridden by Mantic's Dwarves????
Only time will tell.

If they do short people with beards wearing flak armour and carrying las-guns, they'll make a killing.

Warpath and and Kings of war seem like a good alternative to 40k and FB to me... but what do I know

With none of us having played Kings of War its difficult to say. The models are an obvious alternative to FB (really, really obvious in some cases), but I've never heard much about the rules. The few reviews I have read were "generic fantasy game, but with less player interaction than FB."
To be honest, I can see the minis being used with GW games rather than any switch over to Mantic's own rules. People have invested a lot in GW's games in terms of time and effort as well as just money. Dropping 40K or FB entirely isn't going to happen anytime soon, but shopping around for minis will become more and more common.

^ what prim said.
Mantic arent daft. they have to produce their own rules set to justify production of so many minis that are crying out to be used in warhammer, and to be fair to them, they seem to have genuinely made an effort to produce a good ruleset. But, I cant see them crying into their pillows if everyone starts buying their minis to play 40k/whfb with as well as with (or instead of) KoW.
As Spev said, making squats was a fab idea, and they will make a killing. Good on em, i say. killing the squats was one of GWs stupider moments (and whoa have they had many...) Now, if mantic can also make a genuinely original alien species and some nice minis to go with it, ill be a happy camper. They should steer well, well clear of Chaos or anything of that nature. That would make for dodgy, dodgy IP territory. Likewise eldar

(altho big-lizard-riding space elves is a gap in the market...)

Draco-chickens in SPACE!!!
Seriously, they'd need to improve their sculpting a bit to do lizard riding space elves justice.

And no, I will never, ever forgive them for these hideous models.

Squats, squats ...
If the people on the internet who complain about their loss had actually bought some at the time, they'd still be around.

They're only popular now because they're difficult to get.

Put me down as agreeing. Square aren't intrinsically silly, but the whole "greasy bikers in space!" idea was... Kinda dumb. Stupid huge war machines with stupid huge cannons, though, that's another matter, ain't it?

Got to agree with both of you.
Certain elements of the range were great, others not so.
The plastic box set was great.
The Bob Olley IronClaw squats were great.
Exo Armour was great.
The Epic range of vehicles was great.
The Power Armoured Squat Adeptus Mechanicus mini was UBER GREAT!!
Greasy bikers....hmmmmm.....not so great.

IMHO Mantic are onto a winner with their cheap plastic etc. If only their models didn't blow goats then they would take over the world.
Actually, that's a bit harsh but nothing I saw on their site came close to the standard of GW's stuff. Then there are the Draco chickens. Some folks have said they quite like the 'more serious' looking Orcs they produce but I think if you want 'serious' then you probably shouldn't play O&G.
