Confrontation Lives!

Post by me_in_japan » Sat Jul 09, 2011 11:35 am

I never played it, but it had some of the nicest minis ever made. Now, you too can buy em!

http://www.coolminiornot.com/articles/6 ... nouncement

I could be tempted to invest in some of their stuff. Damn nice. Daaaamn nice minis.

ach, who am I kidding? I already own some rackham stuff, and i managed to buy those while the entire range was OOP. Once they become freely available again? wheeeeeee, methinks...

"The plan currently is to produce limited runs, these incredibly hot miniatures will be sure to sell out fast!"

Oh, you were doing so well until that point. You can shove your artificial scarcity up your arse.

I dunno. If their stuff were so wicked awesome, you'd think they might have done better the first time around.
Yes, I know they had problems due to the supply part of the business rather than demand, but I remember seeing Confrontation boxes on the shelves of stores back home with layers of dust on them. Some of the models had started to fossilize.

I totally agree. Maybe they'll be as limited as GW's re-release of Space Hulk? Obviously the CMON guys figure the demand just isn't there to make them a regular range again.

the CMON guys cater to painters. Based off the general chit chat at CMON, confrontation stuff is really quite desirable. I dont actually think in terms of playing games when I see new minis, and it wasnt my intent to imply that the game was being re-released. I was quite excited enough at the prospect of being able to buy new confrontation minis at all, even in limited runs n whatnot.

ach, youre far too cynical. CMON always do limited runs of stuff. there just arent enough dedicated painters in the world to do otherwise.

Remember: think painter (i.e. I want one) rather than gamer (i want 2 squads of 10) and you'll be on the level with this announcement.

So I want 5 squads with every option available, in shades or Red, Blue-Grey, Dark Green, Black and Dark Blue is probably not going to work very well either then? Ah. No worries then. :D

So? Hasslefree, Heresy and plenty of other companies manage to sell to the "painter" market. There's a difference between selling them at high prices and making them limited edition. Limited edition models are no more of a benefit to painters than to gamers. It's just a cynical ploy to boost initial sales. For added insult, I bet they'll spin it as some sort of benefit to the customers, too.

I'm particularly pissed off with CMoN as they suckered me into paying over the odds for the Auscon "Stempunk Dorothy" miniature, which promptly came out in (non-limited) metal a week after I bought the resin version.

some people like limited editions simply because they are limited. And its not like they bent your arm up your back, is it?

I dont see Hasslefree, Heresy and the like as being painter's mini companies. Theyre more for rpg, character typee miniatures, i reckon. Their minis are nice, but rather cartoony. (not that rackham stuff wasnt, but it was cartoony in a different kind of way...)

and how come CMON get shot down when they do a limited edition? Studio McVey, as well as a bunch of other companies do em all the time, and I dont see folks griping at them.

Because Confrontation is supposed to be a gamer's range perhaps and for those few individuals (odd, twisted wierdos that they are. :D ) who want to play the game, it sucks to be them.
As I have no intention to play confrontation, nor am I the painty-type I'm just here to stir things up and get some flame-war style action going on in this thread.

Confrontation is supposed to be a gamer's range
maybe it was in its original format, but it aint now. CMoN havent picked up production rights for Confrontation the Game, theyve picked up the rights to produce the minis. For painters (it being a painting website.) to paint. Confrontation players may well be able to pick up one or two minis they missed back when it was actually a game, but essentially what CMoN are doing is saying "hey, you know those minis that everyone on this site bitches about never being able to find? well, we're gonna sell em to you. Arent we nice?"

That makes no sense. There's nothing about a miniature that makes it somehow less well-sculpted if everyone can buy one. It's the same mentality as "this band isn't cool now everyone else likes them", and that's daft.

It's one thing collecting something that's naturally rare - one-off pieces of art, or old cars (or Rogue Trader miniatures :) ), but deliberately limiting the production of something for no good reason, nah.

Because they're not the subject of this thread. :) I seem to remember seeing Studio McVey's sci-fi range getting griped at on Frothers for being limited.
