This is wierd... Ex Illis

I just found this game through a link on full metal planet.
Its basically a tabletop wargame where you use a computer or iphone to work out all the moves, combat and morale. As you win games, your models gain experience (tracked by the company's website) and new units you buy are uploaded to your profile on the site.
The models look ok, but seem a bit superfluous to the game, but you have to buy them to get the activation codes for the company's site.

Huh. Looks interesting, in a breaking-new-ground, trying-things-out kind of way, even if it's probably not my thing. Any company that realizes it's easier to create a new niche than to try and compete with GW and PP on their home turf is showing some good sense, IMO. The main issue I personally would have with it is the degree of fog of war having the combat results handled by computer might impose. It doesn't seem like it's all too clear what's actually going on with the "dice rolling" part of it.
But come one, Ympes?

hmmn. I like video games, i like miniature games. Not sure if I like them both together, though. Being able to run the software on an iphone is a good idea, mind you, as lots of people dont game in places you can easily bring a PC. The minis are OK, altho Im not a huge fan of the historical genre. (altho, haha, they do have William Wallace, and therefore a Scottish faction. Always a good selling point, that, imho)
I reckon waiting for a bit and seeing what they do with the various armies (particularly the supernatural stuff) is the order of the day. If they come up with some ace minis, then thatll probly help sell it to me. At the moment, I think its a nice idea, full credit to them for trying something different, but its not for me.
Oh, and I believe theyre called Ympes because the designers/writers are French, and are thus incapable of spelling things properly...

Sorry for the thread-o-mancy.
Looks like Bastion games, the company making Ex Illis may be going out of business very soon. Despite their attempts to pioneer something new, they have failed to make the money that they were hoping for on their Ex Illis system. It was an interesting idea, but I guess people just didnt go for a game where the computer is essentially doing 90% of the work for you.
Maybe we'll see this idea revisited in the future, who knows.

Bell of Lost Souls and other places had articles about it in November and December and it has been reviewed on a lot of other sites too.
Even if you had seen it, would you have bought it? The models weren't anything special and the general consensus on the game was "Hmmm, interesting idea."

I am not saying I would have bought it I am saying, I like tools that help me do more gaming and less mucking around with the rules and dice and charts and skill ups exc. seems like this could have been fun... almost as fun as fumbl.com
But ATM I am not all that keen on buying anything that is not 40k but still... who knows... the point is I wish I had known about something that had potential.
