AT-43

Hey, a thread for another game only Dave plays! :D

(I'm led to understand by some of my Japanese gamer friends from my Fukuoka days that there are/were some folks playing in Tokyo, so you never know. May as well see if there are any other interested folks, right?)

This is sort of my pet 28mm scale sci-fi game - it's fast-playing and pretty well-designed, but the big selling point for me (and, I freely admit, anti-selling point for a lot of folks) is that it's pre-painted. I found when I was playing 40K that I'd get, say, half to two-thirds of an army painted up before I suddenly found that I couldn't look another Space Marine in the eyes again, and settled down to play all my games with a half-painted army. A personal failing - for some reason, I can chug away on 6mm minis all day long, but I get burned out on 28mm quickly - but there you go. With pre-paints (and they're really painted quite well) I always have a fully-painted army, plus they're super durable so I can just toss a squad in a ziploc bag, chuck the whole lot in a toolbox and call it a day - cheaper and more space-efficient than Sabol or GW cases. And they're eminently repaintable if you want to go that route.

Also, of course, there's the background. There are two kinds of people in the world, I think: people who think the idea of cigar-smoking uplifted Zen gorillas in power armor is kind of stupid, and right-thinking people. :)

At any rate, my usual end-note: if there are any folks in the Nagoya area who want a demo, let me know! I have a bunch of points of 4 different armies ready to go, and given some advanced warning I can tote some stuff up to Kids Land for a game.

Oh, yeah! Plus all the rules and army books are free.

I do like the minis and would be keen to give it a whirl. Out of interest, what size armies are you looking at for a standard game of AT-43 (model count) and how much would said army cost?

Depends on the army of course, but a typical 2000-point force might be 3 squads of 8-10 infantry and a couple of vehicles. Depending on where you buy them, that might cost something like 200 US dollars if you buy it by the unit.

On the other hand, they do have 2000-point army boxes - some are out, and all armies are scheduled to have one by year-end - with a full army, terrain, dice, a tape measure, a template and all the rules you need for an MSRP of 70 euros. Here's what you get in the Red Blok box, for example - lots of stuff! (They're often available for much cheaper, too. The WarStore, for example, sells 'em for $55 US, which is a steal even with Neal's international shipping prices. And since all the rules are available online for free, that's all you need to buy.)

Edit to add more delicious images: Some folks called Beasts of War have a YouTube channel which includes some videos of them opening various AT-43 army boxes. Here's an example.

get thee behind me satan! I do not, under any circumstances, need to start a new game system...

altho pre-painted is an abomination (imho), I do agree that theyre really quite well done. And if, as you say, theyre quite re-paintable, it could be quite tempting. That said, I really, really should get back to work on the Eldar. If enough people start playing AT43, I could well get involved. The minis are nice. thats always gonna sell a game to me.

I just took a look at the Red Blok box an it looks nice.

How competitive would an army like that be? It looks cool as hell but is it gonna open a can of whoop arse on the table?

It may even be a little overpowered at the points level, frankly, especially against an unprepared opponent. That big 4-legged mech? It's one of the biggest cans of whoop-ass in the game, with the thickest armor, period. Although its weapons have accuracy issues, the cannon rips through armor like nobody's business, and the mortar makes infantry units disappear. Heck, the two-legged walker is a pain to take care of all on its own, before you even start to worry about splitting your AT fire between the two of them. (Most of the infantry, on the other hand, is poorly-equipped and poorly-trained, but that's SOP for the Red Blok. They're modeled after WWII Soviets, and have waves of fairly crappy infantry supported by rock-hard combat striders whose only real weakness is low-tech targeting systems.)

On the other hand, killing all an army's infantry and ignoring its vehicles is a potentially game-winning strategy in AT-43 (vehicles can't, in general, hold objectives), so it's not all-powerful. It's just that dealing with the Dotch Yaga will be rough for some armies at 2000 points.

Sorry for the Thread-omancy....
AT-43 is getting a new edition. You can read more here.

Those AT-43 humans and mechs would double up quite nicely for Secrets of the Third Reich as well. (Heck, you could even use the super-gorillas if you really wanted to).

Interesting!

Plus - holy moley - 70% off lots of stuff at the Rackham store! Dammit, my hobby funds are tight these days too...

(And there's a reason the UNA and Red Blok look WWII-ish - Paolo Parente had a big hand in designing them, and they're heavily influenced by his work on Dust.)
