Dooooo eeeeet!

(Also, in Dropfleet news, we got a content-thin update in the first week of the month that printing issues were still hanging them up. Which, considering how typo-laden the preview pages up on Wayland are, might be a good thing. :D )

Well, they've got all the printed materials in (and yes, it was the rulebooks)! They're looking at having everything shipped within the next 3 weeks, so maybe a month or so for us to get our shinies?

So I'm very happily putting my Scourge fleet together, getting poked all to heck in the fingers 'cause they're just so daggone spiky. It looks like what I got from the kickstarter (a two-player starter box, an extra scourge fleet, and the free cruiser and 8 frigates) is enough for a comfortable 1500 points, which is nice as I'd been hoping not to have to spend much more money unless / until the game takes off locally. (It does look like quite a few scenarios want you to use orbital platforms, so I may end up getting a box of those when they're released, though.)

If anyone's looking for a good list builder, dflist.com seems to be very nice, although the printing options aren't as robust as the java app for dropzone. I have no idea how effective it'll be, but my 1500 points list looks like:

--------------------------------------
Scourge 1500P - 1499pts
Scourge - 5 launch assets

SR12 Vanguard battlegroup (234pts)
1 x Shenlong - 170pts - H [stealth battlecruiser with basic beam weapons - I'd probably prefer the one with the burnthrough laser since it seems like it'd be scary on silent running, but I wanted to stick with what the starter fleet wanted to give me]
   + Fleet Overlord (100pts, 5AV)
2 x Gargoyle - 64pts - L [strike carriers with dropships]

SR8 Line battlegroup (234pts)
1 x Wyvern - 105pts - M [Close action cruiser]
3 x Djinn - 129pts - L [Close action frigates]

SR7 Line battlegroup (175pts)
1 x Chimera - 105pts - M [mothership with bulk landers]
2 x Charybdis - 70pts - L [bombardment frigates]

SR15 Line battlegroup (330pts)
1 x Hydra - 140pts - M [carrier]
2 x Yokai - 190pts - M [light cruisers with standard beam weaponry]

SR5 Pathfinder battlegroup (190pts)
3 x Scylla - 126pts - L [area-denial "submarine" frigates that shoot up from atmosphere where they're safe from counterattack]
2 x Gargoyle - 64pts - L [more strike carriers]

SR8 Pathfinder battlegroup (236pts)
1 x Ifrit - 110pts - M [cruiser with a burnthrough laser]
3 x Harpy - 126pts - L [frigates with standard beam weaponry]
------------- dflist.com -------------

It seems like more than other fleets the Scourge are really focused on getting in your face and blasting you - their "specialist" frigates are both basically different ways to do this, as compared to other races' specialists which do more defensive things like ECM jamming, point defense or shield boosting, target spotting, and pushing enemy ships around.

How did you decide what ships to assemble from the box? I mean, did you do any rules related decision making, or was it more a case of "that one looks cool"?

Sorta haphazardly - there are rules for fleet creation, but they're pretty dang flexible, so I basically started from the demo fleet and built out. I figured I'd need plenty of ways to get boots on the ground, and that suggested the mothership and more strike carriers, I knew I wanted a carrier ('cause Scouge bombers look very frightening) and at least one pair of light cruisers (everyone but the PHR has to take them in pairs), and that's already all 7 cruiser hulls taken care of (the three in the demo fleet plus the mothership plus the carrier plus two light cruisers). Then I had enough frigates to make 3 of each fighty type and four strike carriers and that's everything.
