You could probably fit a Tank Commander in 25PL if everything else is Infantry. You could technically even bring a Tank Commander, a Leman Russ, and an Infantry squad in a 25PL patrol. The downside would be that you'd struggle to hold objectives. But since you have 50 PL to build a roster with, you could throw in two tanks and pick what you want to field every game.

And even at 50, I think some forces will struggle to include as much anti-tank as they might like. (Admittedly, that might just be me looking at the problem through the Death Guard lens, whose solution basically boils down to "stab it with plague knives".)

Something I've been pondering vis a vis the summoning problem (assuming they don't actually address it in the rules) - might it help solve the issue if I have to put any daemons I want to summon in my order of battle? It'll put a hard cap on how many I could call up in a given game, and force me to limit my flexibility in base list building. It even seems narratively appropriate to not give them experience.

That's true. I haven't had much of a chance to play small games like that, so I should definitely hold judgment until I give it a shot.

I'm going to write up my background for my force today and I'll post a list.

Hmm. Having got my hands on the book and taken a look at all the charts and such, I think I may want to revise my stance on rolling for abilities. The situations in which you'd get something useless seem to be pretty rare and edge-casey, so if we allow for rerolling things that are *literally* useless (best example being any of my guys getting Grizzled for a 6+ "feel no pain" save, or flamers getting bonus to-hit enhancements) I think I might actually prefer to roll, just for the RPG-ish-ness of it.

Also: Maybe we might each want to start a thread, with our order of battle and crusade cards, and any battle updates or narrative flourishes we want to add during the campaign?

Since most of the book keeping is going to be done in private maybe we should just leave it up to the individual players what they want to do with rolling for upgrades? Another compromise could be just everyone getting 1 reroll regardless of whether the upgrade is entirely useless. Like I said I don't mind either way as long as we're all on the same page.

Having individual threads would be cool. I could just link to those in the main roster thread then. That should make it easy to find and keep track of everyone in the campaign.

I really like that actually. Even if an upgrade isn't completely useless, sometimes it might just be really bad - like an extra 6" on a 72" range battle cannon. Technically not useless.

Although from what I understand this is supposed to be more of a fun narrative campaign than anything really competitive, so maybe it's fine to just choose something if it makes narrative sense to?

Personally I plan to pick up the advanced bionics relic on my commander as soon as a I can! It's close to useless a Guard character, but it fits my lore so how can I not!

Technically the Crusades are independent, so even if they're taking place in a campaign we don't have to agree on roll or pick

(I fully intend to pick, I don't like random roll in RPGs either. But I also intend to cycle my entire collection through the Crusade so any given model will be lucky to get halfway to a level...)

Ah, the central point.

I suppose that in the best of all possible worlds, the previous game or general events leading up to a level-up would inform a choice after all. I dunno, I'm wishy-washy.

I made copies of the crusade paperwork today, so I'll be armed with a sheaf of papers on Sunday to start keeping track of stuff.

Oh also quick question about the Crusade rules: does anyone know how specialist detachments work or if they're supported at all?

I like to take the Hammer of Sunderance from the tank company detachment, but it doesn't seem like I can use the keyword anymore. It's not a huge deal if I just can't, but its disappointing since I specifically modeled my tank commander to have that relic.

It's just a relic, right? The rules don't mention relics locked behind specialist detachments, but the way "specialist reinforcements" work (you can spend crusade points to get a specialist detachment CP upgrade baked in to a unit, explicitly even if you don't have access to the detachment) it seems reasonable to me to say you could get it.
