After reading through the main book and the generic + Space Wolf sections of the Loyalist book, looking at my collection and the options going forward, I have concluded...

...I have no idea what to do with this stuff

While enthusiasm for beakies was my primary driver for getting into this at all I don't think I want to use them for line Space Wolf troops. Much more on-brand for me to use Rites of War to go lots of terminators or dreads.

I don't have my stuff yet, (hopefully tomorrow afternoon), are regular dreads in the Liber or just Contemptors?

The Pride of the Legion and Fury of the Ancients RoW's will let you field a lot of terminators or dreads respectively, and would certainly offer a different play experience to the standard army lists. Personally I'm tempted to build forces that can utilise those Rites, but I'm sticking to a standard list first and then probably adding in additional options for rites as I go.

RoW don't stop you from using regular troops options, so as you have the specialist weapons pack, some tactical support squads might be a good way to use the beakies. If you have any spare first born space wolf bits lying around, you can also build them as legion veterans or grey stalkers. You may not use them every game, but they offer a bit more versatility for list building and might help you use up any spare points you have in your list.

Alternatively you could see if Jus can print you some bits and convert them to breachers, destroyers or something else that you think looks cool.

Box dreads aren't in the Liber (though Leviathans and Deredos etc are there). There is a callout box saying that "Expanded" units from PDFs, White Dwarf etc. are fully viable in the game though so it seems like they'll be along at some point and be fine to use. This seems to me like a good excuse to get more box dreads

Well poop. I have box dreads for most of my forces, guess they'll be staying on the shelf until the pdf drops. Luckily I also have some Contemptors (and 1 Leviathan) to take up the slack until then. Just need to get them all painted.

I started on assembly, watch out for the cape/backpack on the Sword Praetor, I found it quite tricky.

By "tricky" I mean I gave up and put the cape on first, took clippers to the backpack and *made* it fit. Smarter people than I can probably manage to do it as per instructions but it's going to be the hard bit regardless.

Looks like the release of the new Contemptor as a solo kit will include a few optional extras that aren't included in the starter box version, like new weapons and new armour decoration.

https://www.warhammer-community.com/202 ... w-options/

I've been reading through the core rules and both Libers this week. Those are some chunky books. I'm hoping that digital versions become available soon as I don't fancy carrying them anywhere.

My thoughts so far:
The layout of the books is irritating, the universal special rules are split over different sections in different books. Fingers crossed we get a QRS soon.
I like how the two Libers are subtly different. The artwork and page layouts are not the same, and the flavour-text is different too.
There seems to be less randomness. Running and difficult terrain are now fixed values. While charges are still rolled for, faster units get a bonus to the roll.
There are very few 'aura' effects. HQ's may let you use their Ld, or buff the unit that they are in, but generally you don't get rerolls because you are stood near a lieutenant.
Reactions look fun. Knowing when to use them and when your opponent is likely to use them is going to be really important.
The psychic powers don't look broken, unlike in 7th where some (summoning and invisibility made the game unplayable)
It really does look like an evolution of the 4th-7th ed rules, fingers crossed it plays smoothly. (looking up USR's is going to be the main sticking point I think).

USRs are like kanji, they're a brick wall of difficulty and annoying lookups now, but I'll love them once I've memorised enough.

Overall I'm still a much bigger fan of the 9th ed rules, but reactions are a lot easier to get your head around than Strategems and overall Legion complexity is way less than a full Codex. So once you've actually got your army list together HH may be more user friendly overall.

If Battlescribe can give you your USR text it'll be a huge help.

I've always gone for a pencil, a notebook and a codex for army building before, but between the size of the Libers and the numerous places for USR's, I may be forced to rethink my opinion about Battlescribe/Army Builder style apps.

I stumbled upon this video on YouTube.

A fun narrative style that introduces some of the new features of the game, such as the reactions.

Thanks for sharing.

I've tried watching the Zorpa-zorp guy's videos before, but I usually find him a little irritating to listen to. They did do a good job of showing off the new game though.
Depending on which units activate and what they do, you can potentially shoot an enemy unit twice in it's own turn with Reactions. Ouch!
