Top 5 Most Popular Ranges
Top 5 Most Popular Ranges
A website called ICv2 which is pretty much a geek-news website has posted results of sales of wargaming minis in Quarter 1 of 2011. (Note these are sales from independant US retailers and dont include GW stores for obvious reasons).
In first place, no suprises - Warhammer 40k
In second place - Warmachine
In third place - Warhammer Fantasy
In fourth place - Hordes
And in fifth place - Malifaux.
So Malifaux looks to be attracting a lot of attention, beating out other big sellers like Flames of War and Infinity.
In the RPG section the results are
In first place - Dungeons and Dragons 4th edition.
In second place - Pathfinder (aka Dungeons and Dragons 3.5 version 2).
In third place - The Warhammer 40k Roleplaying Game (Dark Heresy/Rogue Trader/Deathwatch)
In fourth place - Dragon Age
In fifth place - Mutants and Masterminds
Fantasy Flight have done an awesome job with the 40k RPG and it shows in these results.

It'll be interesting to see if the FineCast Fiasco has an effect on the results by next quarter.

Re: Top 5 Most Popular Ranges
So Warmachine already outsells Warhammer. I wouldnt have guessed that. I wonder how it would pan out in europe. I hear tell that PP have less of a presence there, whereas GW are pretty much everywhere. Obviously America is a huge market, mind you.
Anyway - an interesting wee factoid there, Prim. Cheers
^what Spev said, with bells on. I have never seen so many people pissed off with GW.

Re: Top 5 Most Popular Ranges
I am out and I never thought I would say this but Warmahordes not only looks cheaper but it looks like more fun..FB is fun and so is 40k but I am not going to by it because the only way we will ever get GW to stop treating the consumer s like crap is to show them we will not buy their Koolaid when we can always buy Flavoraid at half the cost. I mean who do they think they are...

Re: Top 5 Most Popular Ranges
I don't particularly believe the first table. Not the GW/PP thing but the fact that Malifaux is #5. I would like to bet Flames of War outsells Mali by a long way. I wonder if it was even included in the survey(?) which seems to be gleaned by word of mouth from various sources, hardly the model for reliable stats.
A quick look at Facebook 'likes' shows...
Games Workshop (official) - 28,665 likes
Privateer Press (official) - 7,039
Flames of War (official) - 1,069
Malifaux (unofficial) - 615
Product lines in the Wayland store:
FOW - 981
Mali - 237
BTW, not including GW stores in the figures is rather disingenuous isn't it. Hardly makes for accurate stats. Just saying.
@The Madmiral: When are you going to put your money where your mouth is mate. AFAIK you are the only one of the most regular posters on this forum who doesn't play any non-GW games.

I wonder how many independant retailers really keep an accurate record of such things? As this is a US survey, I wonder if that is why Malifaux is rated higher, (US company rather than NZ). Maybe on a worldwide basis things would be different. Dont forget that Malifaux has a MUCH lower start up cost than FoW.Mike the Pike wrote:I don't particularly believe the first table. How many FoW players are there in Nagoya?
Pikey, Prim, Job, Ashmie, and I believe Fox has a couple of figures.
How many Malifaux players are there in Nagoya?
Pikey, Prim, ToD, Ennui, M_i_J
So in a quick survey of the Aichi/Gifu/Mie region Malifaux and FoW are equally as popular.
Not including GW stores in sales by gaming stores is a good idea in the same way that the probably didnt survey the PP website. ("What? You didnt sell any WFB models from the PP website?") It would heavily skew the results.
@The Madmiral, Yeah, get on with it. Even Voss has ordered some Warmahordes stuff already and he's a GW Outrider.

There you go again, cluttering up a perfectly good discussion with facts and things. Careful or you'll have a whole bulwark of them.Mike the Pike wrote:I don't particularly believe the first table. Re: Top 5 Most Popular Ranges
@Prim: Fair point but a basic FOW army costs a lot more than a Mali crew. I would wager a couple of FOW armies = all those gangs put together. I have four fully painted. 1 half painted. At least 3 more in boxes and plans to buy at least one more before I get much older. As for Mali, I might get a few Neverborn/Guild reinforcements but nothing even close to the above. So by my highly scientific reckoning FOW is waaay ahead of Malifaux in the Chubu area.

So what you're saying is, is that FoW is a very expensive game? Maybe thats why its not as popular?Mike the Pike wrote:@Prim: Fair point but a basic FOW army costs a lot more than a Mali crew. Dont forget, these results are only for the first quarter. Maybe Wyrd had a group of guys going from store to store running demo games. (They do have their own outriders, I dunno if FoW does). Maybe there was a special offer or maybe some lunatic bought a bunch of crews and rulebooks and then pestered the rest of his gaming group into playing. Who knows?

Re: Top 5 Most Popular Ranges
Am I right in thinking: these figures are for popularity, not dollars spent. Thus, 1 Mali crew = 1 FOW army. dollar value isnt being measured here, except in its capacity as a disincentive to buy.
