(I really hope I'm not overhyping Crusade / Combat Patrol in my mind, I tell you hwat. All I want is a WarCry-esque narrative campaign for small games of 40K - they can't possibly screw that up, can they? :? )
I think the failure mode there will be it doesn't want to stay small 😅 Hopefully it'll be set up so that if people want to play smaller games, folks that have spent a bunch of requisition points on a bigger force still have an incentive to rock any given sized subset of it and join in regardless of the size of the match in question.

Low points/PL games are always going to be in that odd spot. If you want to play small games, why not just play Kill Team? If you've spent a lot of money buying the latest toys for your army, you'll probably want to get them all on the table at some point.

(Personal game design / wargaming opinions incoming) Mostly because, as I realize the more I play it, Kill Team adds a lot of complexity for very little payoff in terms of fun. And I don't really feel the need to get all the toys I have for my army on the table at the same time, especially at 28mm, which (as I say a lot but realize is a pretty idiosyncratic opinion) really works best for the smaller engagements that combat patrol is doing.

I'm a lot fonder of KT than you are, but I think the decisive thing is going to be Crusade being a way better campaign system than KT's. That'll give us very strong incentive to play 40k instead, at whatever size. It's a low bar to start with, but the more Crusade resembles Warcry the further it will soar over it.

My real hope is I can usefully encapsulate my ridiculous Imperium collection into a single Crusade, and then play Wolves, Sisters, Scythes, soup, whatever as the mood takes me.

I'm not advocating for KT, (nor for any size game of 40K for that matter). Just pointing out that low points games will always feel the squeeze between more skirmish focused games and 'full size' versions. For gaming in Nagoya, small games do seem like a good call. Crowded playing areas, limited time and the effort required to transport everything makes it challenging to play big games and fully enjoy them.

Well, I mean, I don't hate KT - just given the choice between that or WarCry (not to mention Underworlds) I'll pick the other game. I'm not necessarily opposed to an escalation league type dealio either, although TBH we have so little information about how Crusade words it's hard to have much of an opinion about it.

No, that's certainly true, and "combat patrol" sized games of 40K do not have a great history. My (slight) hope stems from the fact that they seem to be treating it as a valid play mode in the core rulebook, combined with the support they have for the (by all accounts very good) analogous Meeting Engagement play mode for AoS.

Here's my bloat drone done:

Turned out pretty good! A lot of fun to paint, too - always fun to bust out my rudimentary chipping and rust effect skills. Next is some (more) poxwalkers, which should at least go quick.

That was fast. I had that thing for a year and never touched it. :D

Nice work. You really have mastered those contrast paints.
