If you think that skintight suits with barbs and hooks on the inside and the outside is stylish, I would hate to visit the same shops as you.

Eldar are the epitome of style. Classy, refined, sleek and a wee bit arrogant. Like cats in armour

this is exactly why I want to make the Grotesques for the challenge of it..Primarch wrote:But you do just strap plates and bolts to things and say it is orky. At least, when you make ork stuff, thats what you do. Your conversions all look good, dont get me wrong, I just haven't seen you do anything that was as stylized as the eldar.Admiral-Badruck wrote:... see if I can dispel the idea that I just strap plates and bolts to things and say it is orky...

Re: Things just got official people
Just to keep things on the up and up (as opposed to the down low, which is where theyve been until now...)
My name is Dave and I'm a Dark Eldar player
well, I will be, anyway. I ordered em when they went up for pre-order. I was kinda hoping to surprise folks by planking down a fully painted surprise army, but frankly ive decided i cant be bothered with all the cloak and dagger that would entail. Prim had his new codex at the game in Tsu today (how come his arrived already, huh?) and I was looking through it and it seems v nice. Mine should arrive imminently, i hope.
btw, @badruck: I was looking at the pic and fluff of Grotesques:
pic (sketch, not photo of mini): slim legs. multiple upper limbs. some heavily muscled, others atrophied, or bionified. huuuuge bulky torso with spinal bone growth sticking out everywhere. Kinda necro looking. Featureless mask covering face. blades for fingers (in fact, blades for a lot of things.) Slim blades, like scalpels, not big cleavery things. A variety of little pointy/clippery/stabby things coming out of its back and upper shoulders.
fluff: when a dark eldar pisses off a haemunculus the 'munc turns him into a grotesque. spends years pumping him full of growth hormones and other stimulants, whilst grafting on extra bitz like arms and glandy internal organs and toxin injectors and whatnot. After a few years of this, the poor ol deldar is lobotomized and a mask is permanently attached to his head. Theyre largely passive big lumps of meat and bone until their owner says "sic em, lads" at which point they go completely do-lally and rip bitz off anything in sight. They dont stop until their owner says "down boy", so if the owning 'munc gets killed before he tells em to stop it can get pretty messy.
They have a special rule that if theyre ever not accompanied by an IC, you roll a dice. on a 1 all units within 6" take 2D6 S5 hits then the grotesques are removed.
So, aye. go for it, but these guys are NOT ogres. Theyre...bionic-elfogres.

Re: Things just got official people
I got my copy of the rule-book yesterday plus a box each of Whyches and warriors (mainly for converting to WFB and practice). I must say, the Dark Eldar are looking fantastic in this incarnation. The rules seem pretty good. Strong in some areas but with glaring weaknesses in others (like it should be) and the models look ace to boot. The two box sets I mentioned above are only troops but you get so many poses and options. The level of detail is great too. I can't wait to see what the rest of the army look like.
I have to say that I will be asking Santa Claus for a ton of goodies from Maelstrom this year. But what to get? There are so many cool themes you could explore. Whyches galore (My preference). A warrior horde pouring out of webway portals. Bike and Hellion madness. Monsters and gribblies. Super Elite Marine Killers. So many choices and so little money!
I must say though that Eldar players are right to whine over this one. The two most whine-worthy things I noticed are: 1) Basically, all DEs are BS4 which makes them automatically more shooty than their craftworld cousins.
2) Pretty much everyone has access to grenades (especially the excellent haywire grenades), blast pistols or the equivalent. No need for Fire Dragons all the time.

Re: Things just got official people
me too
My stuff arrived yesterday. I went pretty all out (all funded by the good Admiral - thank ee, cap'n!)
I got:
2 Kabalite boxes
1 Wych box
2 Incubi boxes
3 Raiders
2 Reaver boxes
Lelith
a stand-in Archon (A Skorne lord from Hordes)
Da Book
I'm leaning very heavily towards zoooooooooom as a theme. Mostly Kabalite, with a squad of Wyches cos they look nice. I've already ordered 2 Ravagers, 2 Hellion boxes and 2 mandrake boxes. After that, I just want 3 Sslyth and a Venom and I'll pretty much be done. I fancy the Hellion and Mandrake SCs, depending on the models, and a new Drazhar model would be ace (and would go well with Karandras...)
I plan on not overdoing wych units and would ideally like to avoid Haemunculi completely, unless the models are bitchin cool. Likewise beasts and pain engines will be skipped, unless the models are V.G.
Dunno if that influences mike more towards a wych army (variety in a gaming group is always good). If Prim is still on the fence, may i be so bold as to suggest a 'munc army? Then we could have our own wee Commoragh set up, desho?

This is making me wonder if half of the armies at Nagoyahammer won't be Dark Eldar this coming year.

I was planning on going that route in the future, but I will be buying some of the sexy 1st and 1.5st wave models.me_in_japan wrote:If Prim is still on the fence, may i be so bold as to suggest a 'munc army? Then we could have our own wee Commoragh set up, desho?
