Has zero relation to how much you can bench press or military press.Admiral-Badruck wrote:can you do a push up? how about a pull up?

0? so a guy that can do 100 pushups can't bench more than a guy who can only do like 10... there has to be at least some relations... for military press I am sure there is no relation... but a bench and a push up use pectoral muscles right? I am not that in to lifting but.. I lifted for a year in High school. never got any bigger but I could lift more when I was doing football then when I was just knock-en in the off season. But that was just how I felt about it... one could still have nothing to do with the other...

Nope, no relation. I can bench press more now than when I was 16, but at 16 I could load of push ups. As you get heavier it has no real impact on your bench press, but it has a huge impact on the number of push ups you can do.

I cant do any push ups or pull ups, but I can lift weights.
There's a difference between lifting a 30kg weight and lifting a 100kg + (exact figure is a state secret) body.
In M_i_J's case, I'm sure he isnt as heavy as me, but the principle remains the same.

Re: Your AD&D stats
Doing push ups might help you bench press a set weight for more repetitions but it won't do much,if anything, for increasing the actual amount of weight you can lift.

Re: Your AD&D stats
I feel I should point out that anyone engaging Spev in a discussion about weights and weight lifting would be well advised to just agree with him at every instance. He's right. Whatever he says, he's right. He knows far, far more about the subject than is healthy. Bit like me and paintbrushes, only considerably more macho...

Re: Your AD&D stats
I would agree with him if only he had a higher charisma stat... I do however know what he is talking about and mostly agree with him unlike most geeks I played sports though high school and college.. though I was never really in to lifting I was around a lot of folks that made lifting their life. I know that if you lift a lot it makes you much stronger... depending on how much wait you lift you can build speed and agility. I was thinking that it cut both ways even if just a little bit. If Speve says it does not cut both ways I will take his word for it. Only because he does seem to be a bit "COD" about it.

And for the strength debate, it depends on if we are talking about Explosive strength or Muscle endurance;
rep count doesn't relate to explosive strength anymore when you go above 12 reps in an excercise. Your body will start using a different metabolic pathway to produce the ATP molecules that enable muscle contractions when you are doing lighter resistance excercise like calisthenics.
The explosive strength needed to be able to push a 100kg barbell is a totally different thing from the muscle endurance needed to be able to do 100 pushups/chin ups/dips in a row so comparing heavy weight bench pressing to multi repped push ups is like comparing a cat to a dog.
This is why a person who can do 100 pushups in a row at a bodyweight of 75 kg but never trained explosively won't be able to bench press 100 kgs. On the contrary a powerlifter who can push a solid 350+ kgs in bench press but never did any muscle endurance training can probably never do 35 pushups.
It would be the same thing though if the bodyweight that you actually push/pull would be equal to the barbell weight. These two excerices are roughly the same with little difference;
1 handstand pushup with a bodyweight of 100 kg
1 100 kg barbell military press
Sorry about that, but training is my passion..

Re: Your AD&D stats
funny how a topic that started out being about AD&D stats is now about weightlifting. What an interesting little community of gamers we are
btw - cheers to seb - that was quite an informative post. I did not know that (I find it interesting just from a scientific standpoint. I dont imagine Id ever actually put it to the test...)
