Hmmn. That's actually pretty interesting. Coming from ye olde ancient times (rogue trader...) I've always, always, seen list building as a thing you do at home before you leave for the game. (In large part this is a symptom of me only painting things I need for a given game, thus I decide on my list then paint the missing bits).

Choosing your crew after you see the board set up assumes a far greater level of knowledge about the play style of each model in your crew than I have previously needed. It could, potentially, lead to a rather drawn out crew selection process where players take a look at the board then dive down the rabbit hole of "which one of my guys likes 2 storey buildings? Was it Colette A or Colette B? Hang on, no, wait a minute, it was Cassandra, never mind. But hang on - there's a few big gaps there. One my guys can jump really far. Who was that again...?" Etc.

Or, alternatively "agh, I wanna flip cards. Let's just wing it."
*Proceeds to lose hard because they chose obviously wrong crew members.*

I'm honestly not sure how I feel about this. On the one hand, I actually quite like added layers of complexity. I love drafting in mtg, for example. I'm just not sure that it won't lead to either time-wastey overthinking or game-breaking under thinking.

I guess time will tell *shrug*

I think they've always leaned into more terrain rather than less. The 3e rulebook says approximately 1/3 of the board should be terrain. But I like that they do it that way. It's always boring when long range is default the best thing to take.

Crew selection has always been after your opponent has declared their faction and leader too, we just usually don't bother that much because we aren't that hyper-competitive. But that is also after the "place and define terrain" step. In 3e it was more so you could approximate what type of crew your opponent might be playing based on their leader, but it's nice to see another facet coming into play with potential terrain based objectives.

On an unrelated note, I'll be sure to have all my Jedza models painted up ;)

Or a greater bluffing ability to make it look like you know your crew... ;)

My weekday schedule has given me more free time (my weekends continue to be extremely busy with my progeny's 3 clubs activities and my wife's ever-changing schedule) so I have finally had a chance to go through some of the 4th Ed cards for my crews.

Nightmare (always my favouite) seems fast and deadly if not slightly glass-cannonie. Which is exactly the way they were before. They lost the puppet factory with the rest of Neverborn but gained some obeys. Teddy is the new murder machine as Hinamatsu left for the 10 Thunderers (curse her puppet soul). I like them. This is my first choice to put on the table for 4th Ed.

Pandora still messes with your activation order, movement and plus flips so... same? Candy is no longer the terror she was but Carver got a boost. Lyssas seem useful now. Might have to get a box.

Zoraida seems stronger to me. She still does multiple obeys and all her crew seem tougher. She doesn't have to burn a card to get the Voodoo doll out and it now gives out to upgrade cards so twice the damage? Need to paint up those scary trees.

Cooper is going to play very differently. No more PIT TRAPS. I have to see him on the table to see how he functions. Now has reload tokens- it sounds shootie. Don't know.

That's all I have had time for...

So I am done with 3rd Ed. I haven't touched anything in 6 months and the new rules are out after Gencon.

4th Ed seems like a better game and honestly they had me when they announced the end of Kill-a-faux. I would rather play a faster, schemer game where I always have a way to be competitive until the end. This is what they have promised.

I hope my schedule will be lighter through the summer. I was thinking we could get as many people together as we can and have some lets go over the new rules day. Maybe entice some newbies.

Cheers

Malifaux enthusiasts rejoice.

While the official 4th Ed (4E) Crew Builder App has not been released (Wyrd has promised there will be one) an individual has made his own.

https://theoryfaux.web.app/4e

Actually it may be better in many ways. You can call up any card in the game and put it next to any other card regardless of allegiance.

All cards are up to date.

Here is the video that introduced it to me.

Dev Notes

First, a note about timelines! Gen Con is a prerelease of 4th edition. There will be no faction
packs there. This has already been stated but I think some people missed that. This means we
will be running the open beta all the way through Gen Con and hitting our hard stop date some
time in early to mid August (will get back to you with an exact date as we draw closer). At Gen
Con we will have the rules, strats/schemes, and a handful of crew boxes which will have official
4th cards included in them. Anything printed for Gen Con will be locked in. Anything not printed
is still in testing until our hard stop date. And no, I can't give you a list of everything that will be
there, that's for marketing, but you probably have some idea.

We do plan on launching an official 4th edition app by Gen Con which players at the event may
use to participate in tournaments, etc. But that is easily modifiable, so the beta will continue.
Overall we are very pleased about the progress so far. Thank you for all the feedback! Things
are really coming together and 4th edition looks like a promising next step for Malifaux.

Keywords we would really like to see played this weekend if you have time: Amalgam and
Academic.

And

Core Rules
● Effects restricted to once per activation can now occur once during the start phase, and
once during the end phase
○ This change will be reflected in the comprehensive rule book next week.

Looking at the change logs this has been the only change to the rule book over the last 3 weeks. While a lot of the key words are finished (according to Wyrd) a few are in flux, like Seeker @Grantthalemeu.

Wyrd also has some of the new boxes and faction books on the "Up Coming Releases" section of their website. Some retailers have them up for pre-order in Canada (no I don't plan on buying a new crew). The new crew boxes, which are mostly old models repackaged for the new rules, are going for $48 - $70 Cdn. It seems to be cheaper when you consider the cost of the old title boxes.

Looking forward to flipping cards

The latest Timeline from Wyrd:

As we approach the end of the open beta, we’d like to share with you all some important dates:
● Thursday 7/31 there will be no update as we will be at Gen Con
● Thursday 8/7 there will be an update as normal
● Wednesday 8/13 will be the final day to submit feedback
● Thursday 8/14 cards will be finalized and the beta is over

Any feedback submitted before midnight EST on 8/13 will be considered. We also need to work
out timelines for distribution once the cards are finalized (getting them up onto our dropbox,
Wargame Vault, printing faction packs, etc.) and we will keep you posted about those timelines
as we draw closer to them and can better estimate them.

We are also currently working hard to get the M4E official app up and running, so hopefully you
will have that sooner than later.

Why is there a tentacle on the new Copy Cat Killer?
