NH2012 - Painting Discussion
Re: NH2012 - Painting Discussion
So rather than bang on and on about the speed painting. We have 3 people interested so far. Me, Mij and Admiral. Anyone else we can check nearer the time. Can we choose our own minis?
Forget about yesterday, don't worry about tomorrow because all that matters is today.

I am very much in favor of bringing our own mins and then giving them to the winner and the winner taking the loosers out to dinner. Seems like a fair trade. Haha...

Choosing your own minis? No, no, no, no.
I have something else in mind! (If I dont forget between now and then).

Hate to disagree with our overlord
but I thing we need to bring our own models. So we can practice what we are going to paint.

Re: NH2012 - Painting Discussion
And that is exactly the reason why you shouldn't use your own minis. The mini should be a level playing field for everyone. That way if people decide to join on the day, or have a vast stack of identical minis and a lot of free time, it makes no difference to the outcome. It also means that the final result comes down PURELY to brushwork. Composition, basing, and aesthetics wont be judged. (So if the judge is biased in favour of swoosh you wont lose because you painted a marine).Admiral-Badruck wrote:...but I thing we need to bring our own models. I believe you said:
You never made any mention of "...provided I have 1 year to practice first."Admiral-Badruck wrote:Mate no one paints as fast as I do but I am happy to put my paint brush where my mouth is.
Plus I dont want any complaints that people could have won if only they hadn't been marked down because of the mold lines on the mini.
So I will be providing all the minis, assembled, primed and ready for your talents. I will supply enough minis for everyone at the event if they want to take part. The minis will be something that no-one has painted before. Participants will have 1 hour to paint the model to the best of their ability and judging will be done blindly. ie. the judge(s) won't know who painted which mini and wont be watching the painting itself.
Everyone will be allowed to keep their minis and I will provide a prize for the winner. (Though you can make side bets if you want).

I bet I paint the best eyeball*
*this is dependent on the mini actually having eyes. If it turns out to be a Drop Pod or something then this don't count. Likewise, no silly buggers with things like Beholders or whatnot
I have one question: Will the minis be metal or plastic? Reason I ask is they have different properties when faced with Certain Secret Techniques wot I am not about to disclose right now but which will become clear on the day.
Also, when you say the minis will be prepped by you, I have to ask - how prepped will they be? Mould lines play merry hell with certain speed painting techniques which I have in mind. If at all possible it would be nice to give everybody 15mins or so of prep time just to make sure the minis are ok for their particular painting style. I speak as someone who spends about an hour on prepping a table top mini, and 2 or more hours on display ones. Prep is fecking important, and I would not fancy prepping 20 models all by myself just to give them away for a painty contest where they will most likely be horribly murdered.**
Alternatively, you could give out the minis beforehand, allow us to prep them ourselves at home, and just have everyone promise that they will not practice painting any copies of the mini that they might happen to have lying about.
Or, I could just stop worrying about it and see what happens on the day
**because its a speed painting contest, of course. I include myself in the "mini murdering" category for this contest, for lo, it shall be horrible to gaze upon...

I've got a load of space orcs from 2nd ed we could use. Then again that would be unfair if I supplied the minis. Prim it's up to you if you have any ideas. Oh no, lol, it's the Zulu's isn't it? The only way to get them all done quickly.

The models will be plastic. All the mold lines will be taken off and the models will be assembled and given a spray of black undercoat followed by a solid black base coat. If folks prefer I could give them a grey base coat instead. The minis will NOT be drop pods (too expensive) and will be made of plastic, not metal and not finecast.me_in_japan wrote:I bet I paint the best eyeball*

Like I said, it will be an even playing field, so no-one will even have any hint as to what the models look like until the event itself.
