"in with allies, out with fluff"
Eh? Whachoo talkin' 'bout, foo? Pretty much every black library book has some kind of faction team-up in it, or at the very least, such things are alluded to. I mean seriously, CSM and daemons and IG in the same force has been there since RoC, and I've been waiting for it to be given back to us since the travesty of the current CSM book came out. I mean, until 4th ed, daemons didn't even have a codex. Inquisitors and most any other imperial armies is also very in keeping with canon, and dark eldar and eldar have also always been pally. People assume that the dark eldar/eldar relationship is the same as the marine/CSM relationship, but that just ain't so. (as I'm sure an educated chap like yourself knows.)
So, aye - to my mind letting allies back in us actually far more in keeping with the fluff than the previous ruleset. As for the Power Gaming dangers inherent, well, we all just have to remember why we play.

I suspect it's not necessarily "chariots" per se (although in the case of daemons, yeah, it might be), more that they've introduced a class of "light vehicle". Things like vypers, venoms, war buggies, piranhas, etc.Admiral-Badruck wrote:Chariots in 40k seem a bit daft IMHOrkO

Owing to the adverse affects of early rising upon the brain, you are hereby absolved of any and all blame for your grammatical/misspelling faux pas.

Well, looking at that allies table, there are just as many WTF? combos as there are fluffy ones.
I know you guys will be sensible about it, but you have to remember where I play (where OF COURSE players fill 6 Chimeras with 6 Vet Squads all with melta guns at 1500 points). Now, those same IG armies will never be fielded without a Space Marine Captain (Ld 10) and the ability that let`s him grant his Ld to everyone in the army (move over comissars!). I predict that every army I face now (in my meta) will be mixed and maxed (oohh, I should trademark that phrase) for less-than-fluffy reasons. I haven`t seen the rulebook yet, but it`s looking like this is NOT opponent`s consent. This is the part that bothers me. If two player want to have a fluffy re-creation of a famous ally battle NOT on an Apocalypse scale, then the allies chart could be useful. But the fact that it is part of the core rules means, as I`ve stated, there is no reason ever to NOT take a mixed (and maxed) force.
@MIJ I remember a thread that you commented on not long ago that talked about the Imperium`s xenophobia and how Marines just wouldn`t tolerate xenos and such. If I recall, you said it was a defining aspect of 40K fluff. Now, that`s gone. If you think about it, this decision may also be part of a grander GW strategy. I mean, maybe it`s about selling lots of ally units to veteran players AND toning down the fluff to make it more "polictically correct" and suitable for 12-13 year old customers (i.e. Marines don`t kill the psycher, burn the heretic, or destroy the xenos, they just team up with them and work towards a common goal!).

P.S. I chose my avatar as parody of the Ward/Cruddace style fluff that`s been going around a bit. It was meant to be a humorous jab...but now it may become the standard?!

We are the Blood Angels, and we fear not. We are proud sons of the Imperium and the protectors of mankind. We are the Angels of Death and the Emperor`s Wrath – D(S)anguinius

It does largely come down to the meta game. Allies will either be really fun, or about as funny as a prison gang rape. If faced with what you reckon will happen, I would be most unhappy and would probably pack up my army.
And your ideas about a GW strategy isn't that unbelievable to be honest.
