9 hellhounds is ONLY a viable force against 200 ork boyz. I would NOT recommend it against anything else since HH's are anti-infantry and no-one else takes that many troops. Even IG would only usually use 1/2 that number and lots of them would be in vehicles anyway.

Fast tanks with S6 AP4 flamers with a 12" range are useful, and I have a pair of them because against certain opponents they can remove a unit from the board a turn. A flamer template can usually hit 6 targets if they are stood close together. 2 templates hit 1 unit for 12 hits, S6 means 2+ wounds so thats 10 wounds at AP4 with no cover save. Thats a squad of firewarriors, most types of eldar, space marine scouts, an IG squad, a large chunk of boyz or bugs gone. Those pathfinders with their 1++ cover save are dead. That huge mob of kroot hiding in that small wood just became fried chicken. You force enough wounds onto marine combat squads to have a good chance of killing specialists too.

Unless they get killed early in the game, against some opponents they can make their points back very quickly. They are a nusiance unit which forces your opponent to deal with them ASAP, or spread his troops out far and wide to avoid the templates. They are fairly weak (AV12), but they are hard to hit in assault, have a high enough strength to wound most targets with ease and ignore cover.

I have to agree with Prim here. A hellhound or two would make my eldar army widdle itself in fear. Definite priority target. Maybe not in turn one, but in turn two Im gonna start firing off shots at em, and if theyre still there in turn three im largly going to be forced to ignore most everything else until theyre gone. bear in mind the average eldar army only has about 40-50 models. 10-12 casualties a turn is absolutely unsustainable, and thats assuming the rest of his army just sits there smoking cigarettes and watching.

fast vehicle so move 12, range of 12 and the end point of the template only has to be in range, so yeah, good range
