Maybe it's the paint job, maybe it's just me, but those models are fugly. ;)
l don't know if I would go as far as to say fugly but I'm not too impressed.

Detail and paint's fine, I guess, but I think it's the extremely obvious two-piece molds that end up with the dudes holding their weapons in front of them sort of apologetically and appearing about to pitch over forwards. Kind of like the Wargames Factory shock troops or those "Space Rangers" that em4 makes now that everybody used for Marine proxies in the early '90s when there was nothing else available.

Then again, I suppose it's like anything Mantic makes. The point is not to be "great-looking models" so much as to be "a cheap alternative to GW," and in general it seems like that's a zero-sum equation - you can either make good-looking plastic kits or really cheap ones. Being a fan-favorite race that GW discontinued is just icing on the cake.

As the group's Squat in residence, I officially decree this first batch of Forgefathers as non-boat-floating. Let's see what else they come up with. I do sort of hope they make something I can use.
Much of it is just a matter of taste. I like drunken-biker, cigar chomping Squats as opposed to the neo-Tolkien/Norse "By my Grandfather's beard" ones. The old Bob Olley ones had great character in their facial expressions. These guys are just bright-blue tin cans.
...and now his Head was full of nothing but Inchantments, Quarrels, Battles, Challenges, Wounds, Complaints, Amours, and abundance of Stuff and Impossibilities.....

yeah - mantic have rather missed the point of what made squats cool. I aint seeing any bikes, cigars or attitude in these guys. As i said - uninspired.

Unless you are the Perry brothers. Great looking miniatures at a great price.

Well, they're helped out by the fact that they're certifiable gods of miniatures making.
