On spending money...

Post by me_in_japan » Wed Oct 26, 2011 12:56 pm

due to my current Issues with working too much (i.e. not liking it very much) I have just today Spent Some Money. I reckon I deserve it.

So, I got:

Deus Ex 3
Tekken 6 (um..kinda want to smash stuff... )
Space Mahreeen! (yuss!)

all for the PS3. yes, Spev - you can borrow Space Marine when I'm done. just pre-empting that...

I also got:

a DE Venom (number 2, for me. BUT in my defence, I got it from Maelstrom. I refuse to pay GWJ prices, and at least Maelstrom get a cut. In some ways, I'm not buying from GW, as maelstrom already bought it from em. I'm just reimbursing Maesltrom. Yes, I know, splitting hairs. Anyway, my DE are now finished (my KabTruB have been pining for a ride for some time. now they have it, I'm done.*))
a box of DElf Cold One riders. An odd purchase, you may think, for someone who doesnt touch WHFB with a long stick. I have, however, A Plan. This plan involves aforementioned 'zardy boys, some long coats, and cowboy hats. Oh yes...
Some white primer :D (ok, not v exciting, that last one  )

Anyway, jus' saying. Spending money makes me feel better. A bit, anyway...

:)

*with the possible exception (later) of a Tantalus. Which is not really a gaming piece, more of a showboat. Literally so, in this case. Also a FW model, which under the terms of my Spevna Stance (Special Edition) is allowable. :ugeek:

Congrats on your shiny new purchases.

How much does ordering from Maelstrom save after shipping? I've got my initial army pretty much figured out, so I was just going to order what I could through Ikeda-san (met him the other day) and put in a big lump order for the rest online.

@ M_i_J - I'm guessing that you had the DE stuff shipped via your folks back home or did I miss a newsflash?

@Tenorikuma - Sadly GW have put their foot down and you can no longer purchase GW goods from European websites. Previously you could buy everything at about half of Japanese prices with free shipping. Not any more though.

I'm trying to save money at the moment for all the shiny new necron goodies coming out next month, but I did just fork over 4000 yen for Black Crusade today and a couple of thousand yen more for the Daemon Hunter book for Dark Heresy last week. Fantasy Flight Games and their awesome books will be the death of me, or at least my savings account.

It was, alas, a shipped-to-my-folks purchase. The games have to be shipped there too, as you cant ship 'pooter games overseas (more price fixing :( ) The whole shebang will get there by early next week, then languish on the kitchen table for about a month, maybe two, based on the usual efficiency of my mum n dad :(

btw, @Tenorikuma - Maelstrom offer free shipping if you spend more than 10GBP, and their closest competitor, Wayland (see banner add at bottom of site) charge a pretty small amount (about 5GBP for a couple of boxes of stuff.) As Prim says, GW have barred all websites from shipping their products outside of europe, but Maelstrom and Wayland stock a huge amount of stuff other than GW. I get all my paint (cheap!), Warmachine, Malifaux, etc etc from them at a fraction of what I would pay over here. I want to support the local hobby, but I'm not willing to pay 200% of UK prices to do so.

e.g.

DarkEldar Venom at Maelstrom: 16.65GBP
DarkEldar Venom at GW Japan: 4100yen = 33.89GBP

This does not sit well with me.

I am feeling the love with your new banner there MiJ. Lovely stuff.

As an aside, which company do you use for PS3 games?

Why not sign up for a mail forwarding service like Forward2me? They give you a bona fide British postal address to get stuff shipped to and then resend your package to you wherever you are. Might be worth it for large purchases.

Because M_i_J (and myself actually) have bona fide shipping addresses and a quick check of the Forward2me website shows that they charge almost double what our parents would pay to use the Royal Mail parcel service.

E.g. My folks can send me parcels of up to 2kg using the Royal Mail for a price of about 18 GB Pounds.
Forward2Me costs 32 GB Pounds for the same size package.

For people who dont have parents living in the UK though, it sounds like a great service.
A word of warning though, Maelstrom and Wayland will ship your goods in boxes that may actually be bigger than they need to be (I recently got a delivery of models that came in a box that was 1/3 empty). As F2M charge based on weight and volume, this could make it more expensive than it would otherwise be.

Nice idea though and probably still cheaper than buying in Japan.

Or you could just buy direct from GW's UK website. No VAT which pretty much cancels out the shipping. However, it almost goes without saying, you need a credit card (not just a UK issued one) to do it.

In other shopping news, I just brought some petrol, I didn't buy it from directly any of the totalitarian regimes that supply it to Japan though. I bought it from a Japanese distributor so I'm kinda just reimbursing them. I mean I wouldn't want to be a hypocrite or anything :D :D :D

The only exception is books, as books dont have VAT on them in the UK anyway, so there is no real discount. But otherwise, Pikey is correct. (Even a stopped clock is right twice a day after all :D ). I've used the GW website once or twice since the sales embargo nonsense.

I bought a bottle of coca-cola from a vending machine the other day.    I'm a monster.
