For my foray into 40K…
Now that I'm thinking about Nagoyahammer and getting a 40K army together, I'm close to picking an army. I've almost settled on Space Wolves, since they seem to have some cool models and customizing possibilities, and no one else here appears to be playing them.
Does anyone have experience with collecting or playing them?

Stu has some, but don't let that put you off, as stu has some of everything
Personally, I think wolves are the one faction of space marines that aren't complete poo. Coming from me, that's high praise. as per usual, my advice when starting a new faction would be: pick the ones that look pretty. If you want to run up a list of stuff-you-want, I'm sure folks would be happy to muddy the waters by giving you advice

Well, I've glanced through a PDF copy of the codex, and I guess the first step will be to pick a company and design a 750-point army. I doubt I'll have time to paint more than that this spring.me_in_japan wrote:Stu has some, but don't let that put you off, as stu has some of everything

Whilst I haven't seen much of him at the events or on the forum recently, Seb has some wolves too.
For myself, I find that Space Wolves are a good solid choice, but they suffer from the same flaws as their vanilla marine cousins. The wolves have good choices for every slot, but not every choice for a slot is good. For example, Thunderwolves are an awesome choice, but the other options for Fast Attack are uninspiring or no different from what other marines can take. Grey Hunters are the best power armour troops at present as they are cheaper and have great options compared to the other chapters. All the special characters are aces and the regular HQs are good too.
As marines they tend to get beaten by armies designed to kill marines (lots of high strength, armour piercing shots and power weapons), and since marines are a common army, armies designed to kill them are a common sight.
If you like the models and the style of the army I would suggest getting a copy of the dex (I can lend you it) and reading up on the twelve great companies. Then choose one of them as a theme and build an army around it.
If you have any questions about units or how they play, feel free to ask.

One addendum I might add is that Bran Redmaw, the space wolves special character from the new imperial armour book, is ace on a stick. He's a typical SW Lordy type in termi armour, but he turns into a werewolf at random points in the game
Forge World don't have a mini just yet, but it's due out soonish, I think. I can furnish you with his stats when I get home, if you like

Space Wolves are cool. They have tons of character and I hate Marines almost as much as MIJ. I've only played against them once, so no advice on army composition. Start with a little bit of what looks cool and see. The Boyz are looking forward to stompin on you.
...and now his Head was full of nothing but Inchantments, Quarrels, Battles, Challenges, Wounds, Complaints, Amours, and abundance of Stuff and Impossibilities.....

As an army they seem like they could be fun. And if you read Prospero Burns you will really get fired up to play them.

aha, but actually, no i didnt. You dont happen to have an iphone, do you? I just realised that some of the code on this site looks damn strange on an iphone. The top banner is different for a start, and the cheesy smiley isnt there - instead there is (for some unknown reason) Vossy's avatar...Primarch wrote:You pressed the wrong one.

Honestly, I have no idea how any of this works. I just click buttons randomly to see what happens.
