Re: Chapter House give GW the finger
Anyone want to help me make some Harry Potter minis in 28mm? I'm sure they will sell like hotcakes.
Sorry, did I say Harry Potter, I meant Barry Trotter, the young, bespectacled boy wizard who fights against the evil Duke Boredalot alongside his friends Hermany Ganger and Donald Beesley.
We're gonna be rich I tells ya!
Sadly CH didnt just make an egg laying bug and a cyberwolf. They also made the Doom of Malantai, which IS a name GW came up with. And until they actually got started with the court case, they were advertising their products as Space Wolf Shoulder Pads. Now (due to legal advice I would bet) they are Shoulder Pads compatible with GW's Space Wolf range.
If they had just done that in the first place they would have been untouchable.

Mithril totally did for years after Tolkien Enterprises took their license away, they went from Gandalf to Wise Wizard (nowadays I think they have another license)Primarch wrote:I meant Barry Trotter, the young, bespectacled boy wizard who fights against the evil Duke Boredalot alongside his friends Hermany Ganger and Donald Beesley.
Here is the crux of the question. GW had a right to fight Chapterhouse on trademark violation, but either due to the BIG EGOS at HQ or bad legal advice they tried to turn this into "all is our IP" issue probably hoping CH was going to fold; but by God´s shake, there is also an item in the lawsuit saying that ChapterHouse stole the name from them, ignoring CH´s defense that they took if from Herbert´s ChapterHouse: Dune novel.Sadly CH didnt just make an egg laying bug and a cyberwolf. Well, either way it probably wont be good for customers. Either GW wins and everyone stops producing stuff or CH wins and the market is flooded by cheap imitations.
This is interesting though:

Although I understand Prim's concerns, I am skeptical of any claims that the market will be flooded with "cheap imitations". A small company pushing an inferior product is going to be stuck in a niche GW shouldn't really want anyway, and a small company pushing a superior product is going to have to charge more than an established, high-volume manufacturer like GW does.

Re: Chapter House give GW the finger
The market is already flooded with imitations; Mantic, CHS, Maxmini, Scibor, And a couple of other Polish mobs churning out crap to cash in on the 40K market. Amusingly, several of those are vastly worse than GW, but they appear to be selling. And that's just stuff cashing in on GW; Hasslefree, Heresy, Copplestone Castings, Wargames Foundry, Crooked Dice, Antenociti's Workshop and other small manufacturers all have "not-X" minis, although there it's slightly different since there are no official miniatures to be had. Twenty Years or so ago, Fantasy Forge produced the Kryomek game apparently based on the thought "What would Aliens be like if the aliens also had guns?".
Oh, and Prim:

This is the truth. Nearly every Indy model company that we know about builds modes that could be used as GW creations.
