Some of you will no doubt be aware that it is possible to build your own tanks out of paper. "meh, I dont want crappy paper tanks" I hear you say. Well, if done right, its bloody hard to tell the difference. Spev has a couple of very nice chaos marine vehicles made of cardboard, and I have a plasticard land raider and rhino for my nurglies.

This is a hefty resource indeed. You need to sign up for a 4share account to get em, but having done so you can download em (one at a time - yawn). I normally wouldnt be bothered with jumping through so many hoops, but this does seem to be the mother of all paperhammer deposits. There's a bloke on CMoN who's making the thunderhawk. We shall see how it goes...

Yup, altho I used plasticard for my landy, to make it more durable.

I use cardstock and white glue. Just as durable as plasticard if not more so as there is no chance of snapping it. I do think cardstock is easier to work with as it stick easier and cuts easier. Cardstock does have a few drawbacks that plasticard doesn't.

1. Warping
2. Thickness - you cannot bevel the edges as you would with platicard.
3. Detailing - The lack of depth makes plasticrad better.

I think that a finished plasticity mode, looks better than a card one usually. I also think that you should choose your material based on the type of model you are making. For space marine stuff I reckon plasticard is better. For orks, either works.

I like to use both. I make the basic shape from card and then add the outer plates with plasticity.

I will put some photos up today to show you some different examples.

This a looted rhino for my Orks. The basic structure was card, the outer plates were done with plasticard.

This is all card and still very much WIP. I am not happy with the turret and will be redoing it.

If I had time, I would probably scratch-build some tanks out of styrene (what I assume you mean by plasticard). However, it certainly wouldn't be an economizing measure for me…the time cost alone for one would be equivalent to several kits purchased outright from GW. And I think if you were serious about it, you'd want to make one prototype and then cast resin copies of it.

At any rate, Ork stuff seems particularly suited to scratch building and customization.

True on both counts. Very true.

I do it for two reasons;

1. I enjoy it.
2. I have LONG breaks in my schedule and all my paints and hobby stuff at work. Fun way to kill time

If you have a regular schedule and are doing it in your free time after work, it does take a bit chunk of your time which could otherwise be spent painting and playing.

It is better suited for Orks in so much as if you are out a few millimeters here and there you can just slap on an extra armour plate. It will work very well for Imperial Guard and Space Marine stuff BUT it will require extra precision and patience. If I played Space Marine I would, at most do just one or two key vehicles. Bugger doing 6 rhinos!

Not that I am endorsing the idea, but you would probably be better off making resin casts of actual kits. The process of making a mold may not work so well with models made of thin card and plasticard, the silicon rubber used in the process may cause the card to sag or lose it's shape. Plus, the start-up costs and cost of resin for the volume of a vehicle means that you wouldn't save much money overall.

If you have the time and patience to make models with card, they can look very cool though.
