from gamer to hobbyist

Post by Colonel Voss » Fri Sep 07, 2012 2:39 am

As I said in my painting thread, I've been slowly moving away from focusing on gaming. A big part of that is that due to several, long drives aren't viable and I don't get in many games. Another part of it is stress. The last part is that I feel I have lost touch with why I am into the hobby as I showed so well during the 40k ally rules. So I have pulled back and done some reflection. What I have discovered is quite revealing. What it means is that I have finally made peace with a lot of issues.

My problems were:

Massive build ups too quickly: Build an army too fast then have to paint it just makes too much stress. Fluff is great but when the fluff requires a massive army from the get go, again the stress goes up. Skaven, Imperial Guard, Warriors of Chaos, High Elves and FoW are all victims of this.

Building up an army based around a single unit or tactic: Put simply, over focused on one thing. I may like a specific unit for what ever reason but if I don't like the rest, then it's just a stress to paint up. Likewise building up based off of one tactic means that the army get boring once I have that tactic down. Dark Elves, Tyranids, Minotaurs and Wood Elves are all examples of this.

Not fully thought through: Certain units and armies really grab my attention but I don7t think through things like paint schemes and what not. So I get the models, want them to look nice and have a massive brain fart on how to go about it, Skaven, Retribution and Circle all show signs of this.

So in order to return to my roots in the hobby, I've realized that I needed to take a huge step back and in some ways wipe the slate clean. I'm not talking about a complete reboot, sell everything off, but more of a mental wipe, get ride of the clutter in my mind. This in turn brought peace to armies that I have struggled with such as the guard.

First, all painting projects have been taken off. Large armies will just be fielded as is so that I can play some games, but trying to build them up or paint them have been removed. Should I feel like doing a major project, then I have some ready to go.

Second, start small. Build the army from the ground up with fluff added in as I go and complete each before adding to the army. Also, keep several small projects from different games going at once so I can change out if I feel fatigued.

Third, have fun with it. I've never built a list solely for the purpose of winning a game, now I'm just going to build on whim and go back to using what I got and improvising, adapting and overcoming.

So how does this translate over?

Battletech is freshly started so no change there.
40k, I've got some Nurgle demons to work on (oh those lovely adorable cute nurglings  ) so I will built and paint there. Also I will use the Chaos models from Redemption as allies. I have no plan on building a Chaos marine army so what I got is what I'll use and paint for story. Other armies are shelved per point two. Once what I have for chaos is finished, I'll go from there.
Warmachine: Khador is coming along smoothly and it was the first model I picked up to paint. Others again, I'll just see if I get a paint scheme idea made or not once I finish with the few khador models I have left to paint.
FoW: Going to focus on the tanks then expand into the infantry in some order.
Fantasy: Skaven go per 2 so I have no army now to speak of that I am building

Last, I want to build a chess set! I have always wanted to do so, now I am going to make it so. 8-)

Good for you. I always seem to have a million and one projects rattling around inside my head at any given time and it can be pretty overwhelming. Keeping things simple and pressure free sounds good. I hope it works out for you.

Big thumbs up to all 3 points. Tbh, I wonder if you're maybe still over committed due to the number of games you play. Speaking personally, I find 3 systems overwhelming to the point where none of my Malifaux are painted. In fact, this ain't even a problem because I've only ever found time for about 3 games of it. I appreciate that we're in different places (metaphorically and literally) but I can't help but wonder if 3 is too much for me, then surely 5 is too much for anybody?

Anyway, tis just a thought. You're defo heading in the right direction with your gaming/painting/hobby attitude. Good luck with it all, and keep us posted :)

You're probably right that there are too many games to play there. Most likely some of them won't be played much if at all. But I like the minis and I like the idea of painting them up even if only for display purposes or the joy of putting them together. At this point I consider any game I get to be a bonus to the hobby. Most likely what will happen is that as time goes on, certain lines will get more painting time and more priority which is fine with me.

Either way, it has been a huge load off my back. :D

So many great points made here and I think I agree with all of them. As you know I have had a similar love/hate addictive relationship with the gaming siding of things. Painting to deadlines and over thinking the lists and compositions can turn us with fragile minds into raving lunatics.

You are doing the right thing man. I'm giving the gaming side of things more of a chance just because there are some very patient and good folks in our group here. Again the same as you, wiping the slate clean and going back to how I used to enjoy the hobby, painting and building as I wish. No more shitting my pants days before a game because a unit are holding the wrong weapons or aren't finished yet. Likewise I'm going to construct any armies with the stuff I already own. There is more than enough to see me through to retirement to be honest. I've just refrained from buying the Warmahords box set and the Flames of War one from Waylaid so I'm quite pleased with my Will power. Will power 70 percent today.
