Did they come with those bases? If so, then you're fine as far as I am concerned. If you've got space marines on square bases you can think again, but I would guess you're refering to daemons.

The rulebook has this to say:
Citadel Miniatures are normally supplied with a plastic base. If so, they must be glued onto their bases before they can be used in the game.

Some players like to mount their models on impressive scenic bases. As mounting your models on different-sized bases might affect the way they interact with the rules, make sure before the game that your opponent does not mind this.
In short, put your models on the base they came with. Check with your opponent if its ok to use different sized bases. So basically IF I rebase all my terminators with bigger bases, I have to get permission to use them.

I'm still not seeing why this is "unfair"

generally i agree with all that primarch has to say on the issues. One small thing, though, is that occasionally I dont really want to let my opponent know how far away his unit is from mine. I may even go so far as to not shoot his unit so i dont have to measure the distance (if i did measure it, Id need to let him know the distance, of course). The reason for this is I want him to try and charge me, fail, and get mullered next turn. if he knows its over 12", then I lose this advantage and he goes off and charges something else. of course, to be fair, I dont know its 12-and-a-bit inches - I just hope so. If I guessed wrong, I could end up with egg on my face, but thatd be my own fault for screwing up.

Anyway, i guess what im trying to say is: sometimes leaving things ambiguous can be done deliberately for a tactical advantage. (NOT that i advocate being fuzzy or withholding information, just that if you think you can "guesstimate" better than him, then you should be allowed to take that chance and reap the rewards/take the punishments)

question: is the madmiral right about walkers legs? Stuff like dreadnaught arms? War walker legs? And, partiularly, Defiler and Soulgrinder legs are huuuuuuuge. Can you really not target them? They dont have a "hull" so to speak, they have a body. This strikes me as daft. Definitive answer, plz, primarch, o mighty font of rules based accuracy: Can you target walkers' arms and legs when shooting at em?

As usual, Badruck has not read his rulebook quite as well as he may think.
Page 72 of the main rules, third paragraph (titled Measuring Ranges), third line:
If a Walker does not have a base (like the Chaos Defiler), measure to and from its hull (INCLUDING its legs and other limbs), as normal for vehicles.
Problem solved.

half true on the page 72 rule...

I have read the rule I did forget the rule and some guy I played a wile back tied to tell me the legs do not count and then charged me with the legs counting... I thought it was fishy but in the end I let it go... I contested it but I took his word for it that was my bad.

so stuff like warwalkers and dreadnaughts you measure to the base. OK. How about if its an LOS thing? Like, shooting where the dread is obscured by a wall, and you can only see its arm? or only see a War Walkers leg (odd situation, but possible.) can you still shoot it?

And phew on the can-shoot-defiler's-legs. Had me worried for a bit, there. Nae worries to the admiral - trusting other people shows your sporting nature :) Dat's why I asked Stu for clarification :p

If you can see a Dread's leg or arm, then you can shoot it. If you can only see the gun barrels then you cant. For Tanks you can target any part of the vehicle's hull or turret, but not barrels, antenna or the like. For walkers and the like, count the legs and arms as hull or turrets. Since blowing off a leg would seriously damage the walker I think that it makes a fair target.

What if I assault a LRusss and cant touch the hull because of the dozer blade is that a fair assault... and what if he tank shocks me does his hull have to hit me or is the Blade going to count as hitting me...

Hmmm..... a Leman Russ surrounded by Dozer Blades with only the gun barrels showing....that gives me an idea. SUPER TANK - Cant be assaulted or shot, can kill anything it likes!!!
No, if there is a dozer blade attached to the hull, you can hit it. Otherwise it would be giving itself cover and the dozer blade is just representing an upgrade, not making the unit bullet proof from the front. Likewise a tank shock would also work (think about how death rollers work, would you really say "Aw, only the death roller hit your model, not the hull. I guess I cant hurt you").

You know, all of this stuff could be discussed with your opponents before the game if you really had an issue with it. Either the blade is a part of the hull and can be hit, or it has no in-game effects and should be ignored, therefore it wont block your assaults.
All of these things are going to be always A or always B, players can't pick and choose when something counts as part of the vehicle and when it doesnt.

If players have any more of this type of question, use a bit of common sense. If its an issue, ask me as and when it occurs, but really people shouldnt need to be asking these kind of "what if" questions.
