Questions about Combat Reform in 8th

Post by asch » Fri Aug 27, 2010 2:19 pm

I've just read through the English Basic Rulebook for 8th Edition.

I believe I've understood most of the rules, but one section looks very confusing to me, probably because of the language barrier. It's Combat Reform (p.55 BRB)

Most confusing to me is not the text in BRB itself, but the amendment given to it by Official Amendment in 21st July :? . It introduced second restriction to combat reform -"and the unit may not reform in such a way as to contact a different facing on any enemy unit it is in contact with." I have difficulties to see what it means.

I suppose that it tells us "Your unit cannot teleport from enemy's front to its rear nor any flank." Probably, GW added the restriction because it must add the text, "the centre point of the reformed unit does not have to stay in the same place," to allow reforms to widen the frontage of unit. (Keeping the center point at the same place would always makes unit out of base contact with its enemy.)

Well, that's my first question.

I also wonder how the first restriction - "it cannot be used to get a model (friend or foe) out of base contact with the enemy if it was in contact before the reform was made" - works.
Provide that 5 by 5 infantry unit has won a round of close combat with 5 by 5 enemy unit in its flank. The Champion and one Character in the unit is not in base contact with the enemy for whatever the reason. Now the player of the winning unit wants to make his models turn their faces to the enemy. How can he conduct the reform?
Does the first restriction require the player to keep 5 of his rank and file troops and enemy models in the firs rank in base contact with enemy? Does he have to reform his unit into 7 by 3 (+4) formation if he want to make his Champion and Character in base contact with enemy just after the reform?

Hi Asch,

Well, you have answered your first question. If your unit and my unit are fighting front to front, and you reform, you cannot move to attack my flank or side, you have to remain in front of me.

As for your second question, you have also answered that as well. If a model is in base contact with an enemy model, it must remain in base contact with an enemy model at the end of the reform. It doesnt have to remain in base contact with the same enemy model though, it can move and fight another model. If you want to bring more models such as characters or champions into the fight, you will need to increase the width of the unit.
The reform is mainly so you can face the enemy unit front to front instead of having them attack your flank or rear.

I hope that helps, but you had the correct answers anyway.

Hi Primarch,

Thank you for your quick response (as always)! :D
I hope the text of coming Japanese BRB will be more understandable than English one at least for English-reading Japanese like me. Sadly many of Japanese version BRBs armybooks and codices have been more confusing than English counterparts 8-)

My problem with the Japanese versions is that sometimes they move the information around the page (for example the Universal Special Rules in 40k). If I play against someone who cant speak English, I want to show them the rule I am using. If the rules are in a different place, it is very difficult.

On the plus side, lots of the Japanese rulebooks can be downloaded freely.
