Just add salt?
Just add salt?
What do June 2012, May 2014 and now Autumn 2016 have in common?
New editions of 40K.

Re: Just add salt?
I reckon that anything that streamlines the 40K rules is a good thing as far as gaming is concerned. I find it far to clunky and cumbersome to be fun anymore.
If you are the kind of person that actually buys the books, I'd say you have a very justifiable reason to be pissed off about this.

6th was supposed to fix and streamline 5th.
7th was supposed to fix and streamline 6th.
I'm not holding out much hope for 8th.
We had a big discussion at NagoyaHammer this year about 40K and the future of the game and NagoyaHammer itself.

Re: Just add salt?
I think the rules need a major overhaul from the ground up, too many special rules that then conflict or counter other special rules and then in turn are nullified by someone else's special rules...
I say get rid of or update the "i go/you go" mechanic for starters, but I don't think GW will go that far...

If past form is anything to go by,you are probably right.Primarch wrote:6th was supposed to fix and streamline 5th.

Recent times have seen some big changes though. Ad Mech were finally released, WHFB was killed off and replaced by AoS, GW have returned to releasing boxed games, and the Specialist range appears to be coming back.
I'm interested to see what they do, but I won't be holding my breath.

Sorry, I don't want to lug around the 100 kilos of salt needed to believe they may just get this right.

Re: Just add salt?
I think I have played about 6 games of 7th edition. I only bought the 7th editon rules, nothing else. Even so, another round of codexes, Imperial Armour updates and the like still means that I have to relearn the rules all over again. Even if I don't buy them, I'd better try to remember what each unit does and how well it does it. If 8th was to be the final version for the 5-6 years, it may be worthwhile, buy who is to say that it won't just be replaced in the next couple of years with a new version to streamline the rules.Spevna wrote:If you are the kind of person that actually buys the books, I'd say you have a very justifiable reason to be pissed off about this.
Thing is though, a lot of that can be tied back to GW desperately trying to rebuild it's profit margins. Ad-mech was released because the FW mechanicus stuff was selling well and GW saw a way to make a quick buck. WFB died because it wasn't worth stocking any more. It certainly wasn't done for the customer's benefit! The company may have a new guy running it, but he was their accountant for a long time and is still answerable to the same shareholders. He may have started listening to some out-of-the-box ideas (hey, let's give the consumer what they're always whining about), but it's not from any drive to be good to us.Spevna wrote:Recent times have seen some big changes though. Well, that's my negative and bitter view on things anyway.

Re: Just add salt?
I completely agree with everything you said mate
Rest assured, I'm not labouring under false hopes that GW has started to love us again. The Spevna Stance is still as firm and sturdy as ever. I am curious to see what changes they do make though.

Re: Just add salt?
I bought the 7th edition rules, played a handful of times including Nagoyahammer 2015. I won't be picking up a new version just 2 years later. The game is bloated, far too many Codices to consider, dataslates, add ons, I haven't a clue where we are with the game. It's too much of a bookkeeping exercise and rule/rule exception memory test. This is why we don't play it much, and it's a damn shame.
But the fluff is fun and so iconic. And I have lovely models I want to use from time to time and paint in future.
We can:-
1) Keep up with the latest editions- paying what they ask (or otherwise keeping up with rules more nefariously), maybe it'll improve?
2) Go for a previous edition and relevant old codexes. I mean, I still have stuff for 5th. Not as daft as it sounds.
3) Alternative system that covers everything 40k (problem being, nothing really does at present, but maybe Antares could be beaten with a stick enough to sort of do..)
Just my hastily considered opinion.
