Thanks mate!Spevna wrote:Cheers! I only need 1 of each so I'll gladly buy from either you or Primarch.
No need to pay for them mate, they are yours![]()
But chances are, you'll see Prim before you see me as I am a bit of a gaming hermit and am only seen in public on the rarest of occasions.
Commander Conversion Project
Re: Commander Conversion Project
Re: Commander Conversion Project
Hello,
I decided on my chapter colours but I want to ask you experienced painters for advice.
The colours will look something like this:

What do you guys reckon the colour of the trim is?
I looked around and thought maybe, hawk turquoise or ice blueish.

Re: Commander Conversion Project
You will probably need to mix some colours to get that shade. Maybe Space Wolves Grey mixed with Hawk Turquoise. Both the turquoise and the ice blue are very light, bright colours and the one you have chosen is darker. If you are coming to the event this month, I can show you a nearby shop that sells Vallejo paints. They are similar to Games Workshop, but they have more colours available, so maybe you can find the colour you want there.Seb wrote:Hello,

I'll only speak from painful experience here and note that (although it looks very very cool) white can be a very challenging color to paint. Coverage can be tricky, and shading and highlighting are essentially impossible with standard techniques.
Feel free to call me Dave!

It would be great if you could show me that shop. I will be at the event this month.
I watched a tutorial on how to pain White Scars: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EiF3gD8Bqnw
It said that they use Vallejo Paints but all the colours, ink washes and shades used in the video are explained in citadel colour terms like Skull White, Fortress Grey and so on.. Even though using vallejo paint, is it still easy to know what colour looks like what citadel colour? Guess it comes from experience..
Cheers!Admiral-Badruck wrote:very cool man...
Thanks for the warning. Although I'm a real noob, I watched the painting guide above and t didn't seem too hard if I prime in white, then wash and add the white in steps, like codex grey then fortress grey then skull white etc.The Other Dave wrote:I'll only speak from painful experience here and note that (although it looks very very cool) white can be a very challenging color to paint. Maybe it'll be a painfull experience but I'll try.
And I really like the dirty look you can get on the models by weathering on white base colour using something like the tamiya weathering kit they use in the video.

Re: Commander Conversion Project
if you plan on painting white, be prepared to put in some serious time. There isnt really a quick way to do it. Obviously, if ya wanna paint a model white, it can be done, and can look lovely, but you basically have to paint every single bit individually, carefully, and completely. Other colours are a lot more forgiving. Even changing to a grey makes life much easier. (This is basically because if you make a mistake painting white, it ends up a blotchy grey. So, just skip the hassle and paint it grey right from the get-go)
I'd reccomend:
spray undercoat with grey, and try not to get a blue-grey.
Base coat: astronomicon grey (or fortress grey - much the same)
highlight with: astronomican grey+white-->white
shade with: either adgrey + a wee bit charadon granite, or just use devlan mud. (not all over. Just in the recesses. You could add a smidge of black for really deep shadows.)
Youll end up with a very, very light grey, and a slightly brown tinted shadow. pure grey/black shadows are boring and your mini will look flat.
However, what I can say, from experience, is that hawk turquoise will be fine for your trim. Paint it Hawk T, then wash it with a mix of blue and green inks (and thats inks, not the citadel washes. Get some vallejo inks and use those. The citadel washes are great, just not for this job.)
*edit* just watched the tutorial you posted and aye, if you do that you'll get nice results. As with the paints i mentioned above, its not really white, more of a pale grey. I stand by my earlier comment though, that if you paint it that way itll take feckin ages (hah! comments about speed painting coming from moi!)

I don't really mind it taking a lot of time to paint though, I don't plan to get a big army right away. Just buy little by little as feel ready for it. Plus I would feel better about having an army that I know I am satisfied to 100% aesthetically rather than have to compromise.
By the way, I want to ask about washing, in the video it seems like the guy puts black ink wash on the model after he primed it, do you think this makes any difference compared to washing it after applying base colours?
Cheers!

Re: Commander Conversion Project
yup, it does. The difference is:
prime-->wash-->base coat = your base coated areas are clean and sharp, with sharp, clearly defined shadows (the washed bit with no base coat on it)
prime-->basecoat-->wash = your base coated areas are muddied down by the wash and you lose a lot of intensity in the colour. Itd be like looking at the world through sunglasses. The details are still there, its just everything is darker. The transition into shadows would be a bit smoother (because the main colour is closer to the shadow colour)
Both techniques have their uses, and I kinda used the latter a LOT on my nurgle termis. (see below) I sprayed these guys grey, then zenithal sprayed them white (this means I sprayed a light blast of white from the top-down only, resulting in the upward facing areas of the mini being lighter than the downward facing ones.) I then went all over them with green and brown washes of various kinds. That was it. No traditional painting was done on their armour at all. (details n whatnot were painted as normal) As you can see, theyre a bit blotchy and kinda smooshy looking. This is the look I was going for. For your regular mariney types, maybe it wouldnt be so hot...
